  • Rolling stuff on your shins.

    Bad idea? Good idea?

And by rolling stuff on your shins... I mean like "cyllindrical objects" such as a rolling pin, baseball bat, etc. Not with excessive force or anything, just enough to apply firm pressure. I've heard it's bad for you to do that... I'm happy I did it though... I spent like a month with my rolling pin, 10 minutes per shin every day. I couldn't be happier with the way things turned out. So yeah... discuss.

Bad idea. Its a complete waste of time.

If you want to condition your shins, kick the heavy bag. A LOT!

Well as of now, my shins are fine for conditioning.
But are you sure it's a waste of time? I say that because I have felt a tremendous difference after the rolling period.

depends on how you look at it,
rolling objects on your shin as you did reveals more of your shin bone and moves the nerves out or deactivates your shin nerves.
but then again, if you do it the wrong way, it may cause permanant damage to your shins.
what i usually do is rolling and hitting on my shins with gaterade bottles every once in a while plus shin excercises and bag kicking.

There are a lot of misconceptions about toughing your shins. The best way to strengthen your shins is by using a heavy sandbag as stated above.

Also you need to know how to take care of your body. For Example, if you get bruising or swelling you should be icing those injuries. I have seen many students get a bruise and stop training for a week and wait for it to heal or they will get a bruise and keep on training and get a bruise on top of the existing one before it heals. In those circumstances you should ice the injury and wear shin pads to give the bruise time to heal. Eventually the bruises will not happen as often and your recovery time will increase.

          I hope this helps.

Rolling did nothing for my shins.

Then again, I didn't try it for very long..

While doing it, it occurred to me that I like to kick the bag, but i don't have much fun rolling crap on my shins.

So I went back to kicking the bag.

Also: be careful with your body. You will need it later. Don't do anything to your body (for the sake of training) that will hurt the quality of your life later.

Ajarn Chai was here in maryland this past weekend. Someone asked the question, his response was the best way to toughen shins was to kick a heavy bag thats firm but not hard. He stated kicking the softer bag will allow you to kick more times and that will toughen your shins better than kicking a hard bag or rolling or hitting your shins with sticks.

Think he stuck with muay thai and sort of revitalized his career recently with some nice wins. He has been fighting for some time.

I think kicking the bag is the obvious and best way to go... but I don't demonize rolling to supplement kicking the bag... (I used to think less of it before I started reading up on bone reformation and "Wolfe's law".) The only real problem I see with it would be possible deformity and nerve damage...and since I'm ugly and have no feelings...well...

Plus I suggest doing weight training exercises focusing on the lower body (think of astronauts coming back to be little brittles), and getting the right amount of calcium, zinc, and potassium in your diet. (get them osteoclasts working in tip top shape and give them dem tools to make that rebar...hydroxyappetite and calcium).

The whole process of bone formation is really kinda cool.
