  • Banana bag filling

I was just wondering...if I got a 125 lbs Muay Thai heavy bag, what's the best way to fill it? I heard that you can use rags/cloth, but is that really gonna add up to 125 lbs? It seems like it wouldn't even weigh 25 lbs if you just used rags.

    Thanks in advance!

Real men use gravel! Gravel and Sand! remember to only kick it barefoot!

LOL...if you can knock the sh!t out of the 10lb-er gravel/cloth pads with your shin kick and knee kicks, you've got power...

        Psycos,

sand is a very good thing to feel the bag with, but gravel, like peices 1 inch and up!, that would freaking hurt. anyway, i have friends in New York that use sand in their bags. the only problem is after about 6 months the bottom of the bag is almost sandstone. but it makes for great power training.

You could use soil? I've never heard of anyone actually using it, but when you think about it, what's bad about it? The only thing I can think of is there could be a aroma coming from the bag. But on the plus side. Packed soil is firm but not rock hard like sand is. Plus, then you could just go in your backyard and take some. The poor mans solution is soil.

I used to stuff my big bags (30" X 70") with newspapers in the bottom 4-6", then rags. Paper is amazingly forgiving, and weighty also. I could easily get these up to 175 lbs and still be soft enough to kick. If you make your bag too hard you won't kick it, period. You also want it to give so you can train to pull your leg back, not bounce off like it will a hard bag. Humans are not rubber, your leg will stick to them until you pull it off... I have stated this numerous times in various threads, but Master Chai advises filling the bottom 18" with sawdust, then straw in the rest of the bag.

              Thanks for the replies.

I still don't get it though. Rags and cloth adds up to over 100 lbs? How can that be so?

The gravel is as fine as sand, just a tad bit harder. Agreed on the power training part. The goal is to kick through those damn pads with enough momentum to send the pad holder back.

                You're gettin' me excited now...

I have a 100lbs Bag that has shredded Rubber in it. I think they shred tyres or something like that. (similar to the stuff they line playgound surroundings with)

anyway seems to do the trick......

Please...someone tell me...having enough rags and cloths to fill up a bag really equals 100+ lbs? How can that be?

dude old clothes.... just cut them up. its not that hard. it doesnt feel like it would be that heavy, but when it gets compacted enough that shit gets heavy.

You make it add up in weight by getting a broomstick and packing it like crazy. Put in the newspaper, ram it with your stick. Then add a few inches of cloth and ram that for a while, then a few more inches, etc.

Our 200lb bags are all cloth filled and all were packed manually.

I always thought you were supposed to fill it up with bananas, hence the name. No wonder my apartment smells so bad!
