Hello everybody, I was just wondering what stretches i need to do to kick high. What are good stretches to get your side kick and round kicks (round house kick) high?
Hey!
Obviously you will want to stretch on your own with the basics... But before team training, for MT, we all have a partener (roughly your height) and one person is against the wall, (their back) while the other person is holding their leg up as high as they can go, than a little higher--after that you need to pull the stretched leg in like a hug to your body, and repeat on the other leg. For a side kick just turn sideways and have your partener do the same thing but remember to have the leg not stretching pointed towards the wall like you would in a round kick.

Check out Thomas Kurz's book, "Scientific Stretching" for all you need to know. He has a site www.stadion.com where you can get more info if you need it.
Stretching on stairs has helped me become pretty flexible and I can kick high. Once you can do that, warm up with some dynamic stretches in the morning and evening - you should be able to kick high whenever you want - throughout the day without injury.
