  • yearn to learn (that rhymes!)

I am in my first year of college, and I have been checking out various places to practice martial arts. the thing is, the only actually legit places to train are 45mins or more form my college, this is so annoying. I have tried out free classes in many places and learned allot, building on some stuff i knew from grappling in the backyard with techniques and priciples i learned from judo books and bjj.org (it sucks living in rhode island sometimes). So now i'm sure that i am going to go to this ONE place up in Cranston 1-2 times a week, even though it is a hike. I do about 75 mins of BJJ/75 mins of MT, that is how thier classes are structured. I really want to get into the martial arts and genuinely think i want to make it a huge part of my life, i have never enjoyed anything more. i always wanted to practice somewhere and now that i found a good place (even though its far away) i am so hooked and i want to ALWAYS be learning and improving in my spare time. The thing is, with so much time away from the studio i dont have anyone to spar/roll with, but i stil want to LEARN.

how can i improve myself out of the studio?

    can i basically only do pushups/go jogging/jump rope/ect....?

i guess i can try to get books from the library but without anyone to practice with will i really be retaining anything besides the martial arts history i will sift through?

i dont want to waste any time!

    THANKS

Outside the gym, you can work on your roadwork help with stamina, doing various bodyweight exercises (good example of some are on http://www.combatfitness.co.uk/), also working on your skill by shadow boxing, practing certain aspects like getting your shoulder over on the roundhouse, stuff like that.
Im sure for BJJ there are solo drills that you can practice.

Things like that, just use your imagination.

will books help me at all? i plan to pull out a lot of them from the library, i want to at least learn ABOUT all different martial arts and technique, even though it probably wont improve my skill.

i wish i was better at striking so i could shadow box more effectively

Yeah certain books will help, for Muay Thai I have found that books like Ultimate Muay Thai, Muay Thai the most distinguished art of fighting have alot of detail in them. But the best thing to learn off is an instructor.
When you go to the gym ask questions, ask for drills.
Practice what you learn in the class,
when you shadow box careful you dont get yourself into bad habits.

thats what im afraid of, and since i cant be in the gym as much as i want, all i can do is what i can do alone.

how can i make the most of this time besides reading/puchups/running?

suck it up , takes me an hour to get to my gym... I go because it rocks ass... and the closer places lick the poverbial asshole....

driving to my new gym takes 30 more kilometres each time... and im a poor student with little gas money... I still do it though... as far as im concerned if you want it bad enough youll take the time to go to the right places...

              Hi danfaggella,
Have you asked any of your fellow students??
Use the resources available to seek out other Martial Artists within the College. You might be suprised at how many are looking for the same thing you are.
              Good Luck

I agree with KenPoDog. There must be a load of students at your school who are into MA or even Muay Thai. You can pick equipment on ebay focus mits, Thaipads and other training equipment. Just make a flyer and put it up. Watch all the fighters come out of the wood work.

                  THATS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT!

I am actually going to the first JJ/Wrestling club meetings this week and i want to get people together and say: "I'm going to be in the soccer fields every day at 6:30, come with me and we will kick each others asses for hours".

Also, the classes are only offered on certain days and on some of those days i work, and i have shcool stuff ect.. I suck it up my fair share, and i make the most of my visits and all my free time.

(i am currently reading a book called "Martial Arts in the Modern World", and it is very interesting, it explains origins and sets fact from fiction)
