What is your thought on Military Muay Thai guys. In my new gym I have a choice of that or sport Muay Thai. I want to learn Muay Thai for physical fitness as well as self defense. Your thoughts.

No Krabi Krabong is not Muay Thai. They are two different martial arts. Krabi Krabong is a weapons martial art of the Thai people.

I think the poster is referring to Lederit, the name for the military version of Muay Thai.

Lederit emphasized more deadly open hand techniques (palms etc etc) over the American boxing style hand strikes of sport/ring Muay Thai.

Where did Muay thai descend from ?? Karabi Karabong.....after close quarter weapons became obsolete due to guns they kept the empty hand tech and modified it and created muay thai so in fact kk is not muay thai but the father of it.KK is taught to the military along side Lederit so you are somewhat correct.

          Really?

My source here tells me the predecessor to Muay Thai was simply called... Muay Boran. Boran means "ancient".

MuayThai and Krabi Krabong both descended from the older Thai battlefield arts. There is a lot more to the story than simply saying that MuayThai descended from Krabi Krabong, though the two are heavily intertwined with one another. The old bareknuckle fighting systems that became modern-day ring MuayThai evolved "separately" (ok, maybe not separately... maybe better to say side-by-side) from Krabi Krabong for many centuries. The two branches (bareknuckle & weapons) had different focuses obviously.

Modern MuayThai is the sport version of a wide variety (literally hundreds, if I understand what I've read correctly) of Thai bareknuckle fighting systems, most of which have become extinct.

MuayThai Boran, or MuayBoran, is a modern martial art that attempts to teach the old styles of bareknuckle fighting in an effort to preserve its heritage, to prevent even further loss of that knowledge. As I understand it though, the problem with MuayBoran is that it teaches the techniques of the old bareknuckle fighting systems without teaching the context in which they were used. IMHO, however, this is a far better choice than simply allowing the information to die....

In other words, you learned when to shut up. Good.

Next, you need to get started on remedial geography.

be careful of people selling the whole military muay thai thing, only ran across one foreigner who actually knew it and was allowed to train in it. Could be theteachers own variation or approximation of it. One Thai military Colonel/teacher recently did an old style muay thai seminar(although not a military muay thai seminar) in the US and its coming out on dvd, couldnt make the seminar but i am anxiously awaiting picking this up. check here:www.ancientmuay.com
