  • Problem with balance

Hi! I been practicing Thaiboxing for about a year now. I Am a pretty thin lad (Weights 78 kg and lenght is 192). From what i heard from my trainer I have problem with my balance when people kick me and so, i come off balance. Is there anyone who knows any tips for how i can improve my balance and maybe give some tips about drills to do?

    Thank you / eric

We'd need to see a pic or video of you kicking to give you an solid advice.

But... my first thought is distancing. Often people with balance problems during kicking are not at the proper kicking distance to begin with, usually because they are standing too close to the target.

I am sorry if I explained bad, but i do not have problems with balance when i kick it's like when I get kicked or hit.

Some pictureclips from some of the games I gone:

I am the tall guy with military shorts...

I think he means the other way around, losing balance when checking a kick.

So my first thought is angles, if the checking leg isn't pointed in the right direction the other guy might be kicking right through him.

Make sure the leg is absorbing the kick and not meeting it solid, it should work as a shock absorber.

Another thing you can try is coming up on the ball of your foot when you check. Some people do this, others don't. Idea is when you take the hit you'll fall back to your heal, giving you a little extra absorbtion. I don't personally do this though...

          Andrew...

Oh, yeah! I did misread that.

Typically, its because (as Andrew said) you've lifted your blocking knee at the wrong angle. The common mistake people make is lifting their knee pointed at their opponents body. Its real easy for someone to knock you off-balance that way. You need to lift your knee pointed out towards the kick.

Also it helps to thrust your hip slightly into the block, somewhat like you do when throwing a straight thrusting knee.

ya ..you need to spend some time alone in the woods...find some trees that are layin on side in a horizontal manner ..start by walking on them ...then advance to things like the spin side kick and suchI did this for years
