  • Can i learn MT from videos?

Would I be able to learn MT from videos? Why or why not? If so, which do you recommend?

  • #2
You can improve your muay thai from videos, but as for the basics, probably not. It's always best to have an instructor there to fine tune your technique. The devil is in the details.

I will probably be able to receive actual instruction from a guy for only about a year. Is that enough to get the basics down and then continue improve on my own with personal training + video aid?

It will take you a year just to unlearn the TKD.

Eh I'm trying to learn from videos and damn its hard man believe me lol. You don't always know if ur making mistakes, I'd take an instructor over videos any day I just found an instructor anyways gonna start tomorow.

Ryuku_Damashi, didn't some MT instructors advise their students to take TKD 1st... or was it karate im not sure ><

Maybe master Sken did, but he came from a TKD background and was never a Muay Thai fighter in Thailand.

No camps in Thailand advise taking TKD first

That depends completely on the individual. How well you pick things up, how your physical fitness level and flexability are, and how often you train.

I would recommend that you also watch a lot of muay thai matches and study their technique.
But having an instructor is so much better. Best is having instructor and watching lots of instruction vids as well as stand up fighting.
For kicking I recommend watching all of Buakaw Por Pramuk's matches (in K-1 world max).

Your friend will probably be able to help you in the beginning with the basics, but without an instructor there will probably be a lot of things that you could improve that neither you nor your friend notice.

your are prob gonna have a hard time learning mt, cause u prob have a bunch of bad habbits from tkd. especially from just videos. mt is completely different than tkd. your are going to have to change everything. u cant hop around like u do in tkd and the footworks a bit different. u gotta be more planted and your sidekicks are going to be harder to throw cause u arent supposed to be that sideways in mt and throwing it from the mt stance can give it away easier. also u will never truly learn mt without lots of experience sparring hard opponents.

You'll probably be able to find another trainer, I mean you live in NJ.

u probably could, if u r gifted enough, but i still recommend to take the classes instead, most of them have sparring too, thats always good to bring all ur skills to the table, and see how far u've understood.
however, the footwork system of muay goes somethin lke this:
KEEP HANDS UP @ ALL TIMES
                        1) have the rear foot pivot
                        2) ur muay T stance
                        3) have the rear foot's heel pointed at the opponent, at the point of impact
                        4) lead with the shin
                        5) take one step into ur target (or the bag), then kick
                        6) still snap ur leg as hard as possible
                        7) think of hitting as penetrating through target
                        8) keep ur body straight when ur kicking leg is in the air

                          Muay Thai in Thailand

"Muay Thai in Thailand" DVD has a good overview on the background of Muay Thai. It includes a visit to a Muay Thai camp and live fights in Bangkok. Amazon.com has it.

You can get the basics from DVDs, but a good instructor and training partners are needed to really learn the arts.
