  • muay thai....no hope

I have yet to find anywhere or anyone who teaches muay thai in my area. I really, really, really wanted to learn muay thai. I was hoping i wouldn't be stuck here for more than year but it looks like i am. If anyone knows a place or someone in my area can you please tell me, it would be great. I mean i've search all over the internet for places and it seems like everywhere else teaches muay thai except here. If i can't find a place i may just have to teach myself if thats even possible. So please if anyone know a place or person in RAPID CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA that teaches muay thai that would be great!

Well, if muay thai is not in your city or a close enough vecinity you have a couple of options is there a hard karate style or hard mixed fighting style or boxing around. Other options would be going to seminars and instructionals. Maybe, you might have to forget about it and have fun training with a style that gives you a good depth of technique, it may not be muay thai, but it's training nevertheless.

        That sucks, but......

If you've got some training partners, you could all chip in to bring someone out to you. Start a Muay Thai training group. It's not as good as having a real school to go to, but with the right gear and instruction, it's a possible way to get things rolling. Bring that person in annually, or take a few trips a year to the Fairtex camp for the week long sessions.

There are options, just depends on how bad you want it. Best of luck,

        William

Maybe you could do TKD for now? There are a lot of similarities and I bet the workout and flexibility from TKD would be beneficial to any future Muay Thai training.

              Maubee,

I am in Carroll Iowa which is about 7-8 hours from you, but a guy named Josh Usera is in Rapids City. He has a martial arts school there and I do not think Muay Thai is the main theme, as they used to do the point circuit for quite a while...BUT..I promote Muay Thai events here in Iowa and Josh brought a team of 5 fighters (including himself) to our show in August. They have MMA fighters and kickboxers (they do IR and Muay Thai). I don't know the name of his school. but I can give you his email addy or phone number. I have to look it up, not here with me, so I will post again this weekend with that info if you want it.

I am the State Rep for Western Iowa and the Greater Des Moines area with the T.B.A. and I am open to teaching seminars as well. I have done several in Iowa and Illinois. So, that is an option as well if you have others who would want to train with you. I can make it once a month or close to it and give you the curriculum you need to keep going. So that could be a thought for you too.

              Hope this helps!

He has both MMA and Muay Thai fighters and they are pretty good fighters. Check him out, he is the only one I know in the area. Sorry it took so long to get this posted. I forgot about it.

Even if you aren't a soldier, they'll generally let you train with them.

As for my friends in Rapid City, try your hand at boxing. There's a gym called the Ironwolf Gym on St. Joseph street there. Boxing will give you the conditioning, discipline, contact, and hands (better hands, in my opinion), and will develop much, much better footwork than Muay Thai. Also, chances are someone at that gym will have some experience in Muay Thai and can work with you, even if it's just additional training. Then, when you finally do go somewhere you can train Thai Boxing, you'll already have a good foundation, and some tools that may even put you ahead of the game. Just an opinion...
I'll second that...going to boxing to Thai boxing was actually an incredibly natural transition. And some training methods stay the same across both...in a sense it's like focusing on the hands of Thai boxing, if you want to look at it like that. And yeah, boxers use a lot more footwork.
