  • Thai Pad work...

I am looking for a book with more detailed information on coaching with the thai pads, especially some that contain good pictures (or if a website, video clips). Any books or website recommendations appreciated.

Tassadar, IMHO the best way to learn how to coach with the pads is to sign up at a muay thai gym and stay there for atleast 6 months. By that time, you'll not only have fed the pads hundreds of times, you'll have hit them yourself, gotten some instruction on fundamentals and have sparred atleast a dozen or so times (maybe more if you are enthusiastic about it).

You might look into the Thaiboxing Association of America (TBA). I've been told its an excellent standard and you really earn your certification!

      I second that.

I personally dont feel the TBA certification process is tough enough. Just an opinion.

Master Toddy in Las Vegas has some instructor programs you might want to look into, they are about a week long each - you'll learn a lot of what you need to become an instructor and or trainer.

If you think you are ready to coach I would suggest a private lesson with a Kru to see where your skill level is at. DRag'n it takes longer to become in Instructor under Master Toddy than 1 week, he offers the assistant instructor program first, to learn the fundementals of coaching, the Instructor program is for people "Allready running a school or about to open their own school" this assumes you have some experiance with coaching Muay Thai. you can learn more about the courses offered at Mastertoddy.com

I am no where close to becoming an instructor or a coach. I am in the intermediate stages of training. My goal (and maybe I did not phrase my first question properly) is that I want to become a bit more proficient when using the thai pads, both in Muay Thai classes and as I train with my partners...

it's cool Dragn, hey if your in Tokoyo do you ever hear about a fighter named Kiyotaka Kato? I trained at Master Toddy's with him back in the early 90's I think he is fighting in regular (western) boxing matches now.

For those interested in the original question, I have rummaged through a few Muay Thai books (including some more westernized Kickboxing ones), and the book with some info (not much) is Muay Thai Kickboxing by Chad Boykin. The info is basic and brief, but more than most other books I have searched through so far.

When I do rounds on the thai pads I go for like 3min 3rounds. But the last time I trained with my uncle I was doing 5min of all out combos with every strike going almost to the max. I did that for 3 rounds with 30 second rest and no break when doing the actual training. I have not been training close to what anyone here does, actually I haven't trained in 2 almost 3 months but I just practice my kicks and punches in my room to keep up a little.
