  • When you get to Salem on the Hut Shuttle, it is best if you call either 503-364-5170 or 503-516-7014. And be patient. A lot of emergency problems came up just this morning involving camp helpers and also involving the state park. Just don't worry, it will be resolved but we will be dealing with a lot of unforeseen things between now and Friday morning and it may take some time to actually come get you from downtown Salem. We only have so many people and so many drivers until people from out of state begin to arrive, so the progression of things is geometric, like an inverted pyramid. As far as the North entrance to the park is concerned, that is only applicable if you come in from the North via Silverton. If you come on Hwy 22 from Salem you will come into the South entrance, but it is the same road, just different ends. As usual we will try to get signage out. If you get lost it will only be by a matter of a few miles, and is almost impossible. I am really exceeding my purview here, so please help us help you by helping yourself more...

0104 a.m. Just returned from the camp with Jeremy Wijers and Master Chai. I am working the phone, calling everyone I know within an hour's radius of my house trying to round up 4 more bags. People have let us down this year already, so we are scrambling to find enough. Jeremy is on the phone at his house with an all-night copy shop getting signs made, we will hang them tomorrow on our way back up. Funny how some of us will take every bag we own, and others will give none; meanwhile we are somehow still surviving as family. As we were leaving the motel where Master Chai is spending the night, Jeremy stopped and rolled his window down and said, look at the reader board. It said: 'Forgiveness is an expensive gift, it costs nothing to give.' lol...poetic. Many campers have arrived early, and everything is done for the most part, except for the hanging of the bags, which cannot begin until we know how many and what type of bag we have so we can place them correctly. The Oregon Forest Service threw us a curve by forbidding us to install showers this year, so we will be shuttling people down to the solar showers, 1 1/2 miles away. It's nice seeing old friends, meeting new friends, and seeing new people who look vaguely like old friends so I am still not sure. I plan on staying up at Silver Falls until next Wednesday, so thanks for bearing with us these past few weeks Tim. I will try to remain awake next week and give a summary

              • I really enjoyed camp this year. This was my 5th year, and I thought that this one was the best. I liked the stations in the morning. I got so much info, I'll be sorting through it for a while.

                • My Apologies for Taking So Long

It has now been a little over a week since the end of the 2006 Camp. I didn't work out a lot this year, just like the last few years. I did manage to jog with the fighter group every morning but the last, there were 109 in the largest morning run, as counted by Ajarn Inosanto down at the turnaround. It was cold every night so I usually put a log on the fire about 2 a.m. and then turned in. I did get to do Professor Trigg's boxing class until I was called by Ajarn Chai to deal with some problems involving the Park Department. Seems we will really have to do some talking if we wish to come back to Silver Falls. They do not want us to park any RVs overnight, only want 12 tents total at the ranch, and limit parking to 25 cars max. If we want more tent spaces we must be in the tent area about 3 miles away and run a shuttle each direction every day. So...we will see. Martha, who we have worked with 12 years now, came by to say our problems are limited to just one person and with any kind of luck we should be able to convince him we are an asset by next year. That is the job for Bruce Raymer, Dan Burke and myself. The reason I didn't work out in the afternoons at all is I was given permission to teach Krabi-Krabong workshops during the session. Ajarn Chai has really been active helping me this year, I cannot thank him enough. This year was completely differerent as far as working out went. In the afternoons Ajarn Chai assigned different teaching aspects to senior instructors, and they taught while he assessed and critiqued. In the after camp discussions I had with him, he felt there was not enough physical difficulty with this, so look forward to more changes. I believe, and it was indicated to me, he will go back to the harder workouts next year, but still will use his senior instructors some way. We tossed about the idea of an instruction-heavy camp and a training-conditioning camp but I think that won't happen. Any problems at the camp itself were relatively minor this year, the most critical in my opinion being the fleas that were in the cooks' rental trailer. There were lots of dogs and kids, like camps in Thailand. And a wide variety of skill levels and styles represented. And everyone got on surprisingly well. I really enjoyed everyone I got a chance to talk with. One of my personal highlights was getting to see my old friend Bruce dance with his nieces at the powwow. Lots of pictures are out there and many will be posted, probably on the 2006 thread. Thanks again to all.

                    • Merry Christmas

and Happy New Year from Master Chai. He is relaxing at his home in Thailand for a few weeks. Meanwhile, it is official we will not be going back to Silver Falls. So, Dan Burke is working on getting us back to Camp Wilkerson in late July. This next camp will be much more physical than the 06 camp, so get in shape. From all of us who work at the camp, our thanks and respects, and wish all a happy holiday season.

                      • Silver Falls was a beautiful place. I am glad I got to visit. Anyone who can, should hike that trail around and see the different falls.

Happy Holidays to all those I met at camp. I hope you all have a prosperous New Year and that I'll have the pleasure of your company again sometime in 07.

                        • Happy New Year

I strongly urge everyone who is planning to come, wishes to come, or has come to the Pacific Northwest Muay Thai Camp in the past to go to www.singto.co.uk , techniques section, scroll down to Introduction to Muay Thai Judging and Refereeing by Tony Myers, and read it thoroughly. A different version of the same article can be found at www.MuayThaiOnline One reason to read this could be now that muay Thai is finally getting a good start in the United States it behooves us to know what techniques score and why, what techniques do not score and why not. Another reason might be a possible change to the test. Regardless, this is good stuff for us to know.

                          • 2007 Pacific Northwest Muay Thai Camp

It is time again to start preparing for camp. This year it will be held again at Camp Wilkerson near Rainier, Oregon (across the Columbia River from Longview, WA). Anyone wishing to tent will be required by the county to put their tent down by the creek in the tenting area, and no one will be allowed to camp in the big field near the church/bell tower. I have stayed there before, it is approximately 1/4 mile from the training area; take this into consideration. This will be a deal between you and Columbia County Parks, and will cost an additional $10 per night. A very limited number of tents will be allowed within 15 yards of the Adirondacks, but anyone who has been there will know that is not really a viable option, poison ivy and poison sumac being plentiful. I have it from Master Chai that because last year's camp was easy, and the MMA people got a wrong impression of the conditioning required to do muay Thai, this year it will be very, very hard. Every veteran knows the run at Wilkerson is either up or down, there is no flat. Also the newbies need to know it is loose gravel with only 1 lane each direction that can be considered easy on the ankles. The shadow-boxing and Thai pad areas are bumpy turf, and it is easy to sprain an ankle or wrench a knee. To maximize your training, come prepared physically. It is always colder in the Coastal Range than in the Cascade foothills, and there are gnats, no-see-ums and mosquitos at night. A good flashlight is a must, so is a hat or hood. Sunscreen is advised. Anything else anyone can recommend will be posted here continuously. See ya

                            • One of the numerous benefits of attending camp is the opportunity to meet a great many incredible individuals. It was a true pleasure and honor to meet Kru Bradley Dobler. His energy, enthusiasm and exuberance seem limitless. He gave several demonstrations, a few of which can be found here:
