  • keep getting my kicks grabbed

Hey whats up everybody. Ive switched to thaiboxing recently from boxing and i really enjoy it. I have a problem though when i spar, my kicks (epsecially body kicks) get grabbed alot by my opponents. In full contact im sure they would be faster but i think i may just be telegraphing. I find it hard to keep from telegraphing thai kicks though. any tips or suggestions, thanks for the help.

Best tip, dont drop your hands and lunge (with back roundhouse). When you drop your hands, your opponent knows a kick is coming. Try not to step to throw.

Try this, throw multiple kicks at a thai pad or bag but dont stop, as soon as your foot comes back down from the kick, throw it right back. Most new guys like to step to get the power. Also, if its training, you shouldnt throw it to kill so it is easier to catch. oh and most skilled thai boxers it becomes second nature to catch it.

I agree mauythaiguy15...I also like to follow through...if the opponent grabs your kick so what...keep it going to you hit the ground target with your foot...can make opponent surprised and off balance...But your arms and hips can telagraph so practiceing multipal kicks is best...WATCH THOSE ARMS...and follow through allthe way with the kick...climb them if you have to...Not so sure about the rules...but it works...a guy cought my kick I just kept going forward with elbows and knees...this in practice no rules....good luck

I'd like to hear more about what you think of muaythai from a boxer's opinion.

        Work on throwing faster kicks.

Also if your partner grabs your kick, follow with a straight from the same side. i.e. you throw a rear leg right thai kick to your opponents body, opponent hooks it, you immediately follow up with a straight right to his face.

If he doesn't post on your shoulder, try to pull your leg in (pulling yourself closer), clinch and drive the other knee - a bit risky as you might get caught.

Try not to start your attack with a kick. Set it up with a combination to expose his head, then slam a kick into his thigh. Also use your kicks defensively after slipping or blocking.

what seems to work for me is to probe with low kicks and use the middle kick at the end of a hand combination.

If you are constantly getting your kick caught, and are tired of it, ask your instructor to teach you snap knees. Unless your opponent is an accomplished and practiced fighter, you can score on him easily.

Thanks guys, im gonna have to work on my kick speed and non telegraphic motions because i think part of the problem is stepping before the kick and also dropping the hands sometimes. Also, i notice im not returning the leg back properly so it just hangs there for a split second i think. regarding tom yum's question, i like thaiboxing alot because its got more atacks than straight boxing. boxing gave me fast hands and now thaiboxing is giving me knees and kicks. sometimes i find myself moving too much like an american boxer but then i quickly correct. It's alot more fun because boxing got boring whereas muay thai keeps me on my toes.

Here's my two cents. Use the Foot Jab more. Set him up with plenty of foot jabs both left and right. Feint a lot with you hands and try to use the roundhouse as a surprise or catch him as he is launching his attack.

if you opponent catches your kick everytime your telegraphing way to much try doing some fakes . like jab right kick ,lift left knee fake foot jab rear kick , work on throwing your kick from different angles too .

just gotta get your speed up
don't make to many movements perpairing to through a kick.
And you may also need to set up your kicks. Throw a fake jab or back fist strike, then a kick combo fallowed by a hand combo.

Try varying the height and angle of your kicks. If your kick is high, about upper chest level, or low, lower thigh, your opponent won't be able to catch them. You might also choose a different target. If you're throwing a round kick, rather than go for your opponents lead leg, step diagonal and aim for the inner thigh of his rear leg. That one works out for me alright.

My MT friend taught me this little trick. The guy catches your leg, you jump or hop into him with as much force as you can. As the same time you turn your "Caught" kick to do a knee to the person's chest. Be sure to protect your face as you do this, i shouldn't need to tell you what would happen if he so much as stuck his hand out.

Another move is a drop kick. You just lift the other leg off the floor and slam him in the head with a shin kick or knee. Happened to me before. It only works like it should if your leg is caught around the ankle, any higher you won't be able to turn very well.

But those are just a few remedies for the sypmtoms of the problem. You should always get to the bottom of it instead of looking for short term cures. Do i telegraph my kicks too much? Is my balance ok? That type of stuff.

When ever my kicks are grabbed i find that they weren't going to land well in the first place. You always gonna telegraph a little, so I would work on the placement of the kicks and just kick harder in general. Think about it, if you see a good kick coming, that you know that's gonna get you good, would your first reaction be to grab it? I'll check and block.
