  • MMA(many styles) or one at a time?

The MMA school I am thinking of joining teaches many styles. Originally i just wanted muay thai, or maybe BJJ. But you can also take a class called "MMA" and its a mix of many styles. I could either take 2 separate classes of muay thai and BJJ, or i could take MMA...Here is the dicription of "MMA" class dirrectly from their site:

"Our Mixed Martial Arts class or (MMA) is designed for practical self defense. It is comprised
of many different styles of martial arts including Gracie or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Submission
Wrestling, Judo, Boxing, Jun Fan Gung Fu (Bruce Lee's martial art) and Muay Thai. You will
learn to flow between all the ranges of combat. Kicking and punching range, trapping, clinching,
pummeling, take downs, and ground submissions. We do not do (kata) and we do not break
boards! This is a no nonsense approach to defending yourself and many of the techniques you
will learn are used by law enforcement and military special forces."

I want your opinions on if you think its better to study styles one at a time or should I take the general MMA class? I primarily want muay thai and BJJ, but maybe taking a MMA class could be good...what do you think?
    thanks

I started with wrestling in school then I got into Shootfighting (closely related to MMA (my school taught MT and BJJ seperatly too). Shootfighting really gave me a lot of base stuff. Got me good boxing and takedown def.

After awhile, I wanted to get into BJJ. Id say go for MMA until you find whichone you like better or if you like MMA better.

The good thing about MMA or shoot, is you mix both styles. If you take MT and BJJ seperate, there are aspects that you miss. Sprawl, shoots, all this are missed. Its really up to you, I prefer MMA (right now im doing BJJ thou to get better at grappling)

Ask if you can try each class.

MMA is awesome, very practical for self defense purpose. Plus last time i checked UFC and Pride people make more money than muay thai guys, if that's what your're thinking of course.

Dont worry about how many martial arts they borrow technique from. Its not like they will teach you judo one day and then boxing the next. they will just teach you the relevant techniques that work in MMA.

That's good. What you do should be based on what you want, if you wanted Thai and bjj for the culture and art that's different that wanting it as an effective combat combo. I'd recomend MMA for effectiveness personally, though I do think it's a lot of fun too, so I could be biased, heh.
