Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

are you training in Thailand or with Thai's? if so expect to get pushed hard by some of the nicest people you have ever met! Just be ready to sweat and try to pace yourself, in through the nose out through the mouth. Post back and tell us who you are training with and where, and let us know how it goes.

Expect to be walking funny for the first few days, until your body and especially your legs get used to the strain. Expect to become totally addicted too.

oh yea, I could barely walk for the first week, stupid jump rope....
My anxiety was all for nought. The class went well and was not as difficult as expected.
We basically paired up with partners and did two man drills throughout the session. The kru walked around mumbling "hmm..good good" or stopped to correct us.
I felt somewhat neglected and thought the instructor was not attentive enough.
The teaching was also very laid back and unstructured, much like how it is in Thailand.
I know the teaching philosphy between thai and westerners differ. I think the main reason stems from the fact that Thais start at an early age and can grow up emulating others till their skills are perfected.
In the US, I'm guessing that most pratictioners start in their 20's and are used to the question and answer guidance method. I think for late starters..this is actually the better way to learn since you don't have the necessary time to make gradual adjustments by emulating others and spending countless hours in the camp like the Thais.
I felt as if what I did at the gym I could have done myself with another willing partner at home. There was no real correction of technique.
it was obvious that i was not doing my push kick right, but the kru didn't mention anything until I asked about the proper form.
I AM addicted..and love it...but wasn't too keen on the way the classes are run.

so who is your Kru? where did he fight/train at? in a class of 30 individual instruction from the Kru is going to be limited, more than likely what he will end up doing is demonstrating the techniques/tools you are going to be working on and then pairing you with a senior student for some drills. Then he will walk the floor making corrections and giving encouragement. if possible IMO I would take a free introductory class at another Muay Thai gym if this is possible to see how they compare.
If the classes are busy, an idea might be to a do a private lesson with your instructor every now and then. You will pick up more in these lessons, improve quickly and during the classes you wont be just another face for the instuctor and he might give you a little extra help. In Thailand for half as many people you would have about five trainers so plenty of attention, not just the long hours of training.
There are always braggarts who think themselves clever. They say of other boxing that at one glance they know it. They dont realise that while at one glance they knew it, if they look again they wont know it.
