Boxing bag / freestanding.

Hey, sorry if this is the wrong forum to be asking these kinds of questions but here it goes :

I'm thinking of getting a punching device of some sort. Are the freestanding bags as good as the hanging ones?
I'm gonna have it in the basement and it would be great if I don't have to drill any holes in the ceeling to hang the bag..By the way, is there a way of hanging a bag without the use of screws, for example with vakuum or something? (that would be awesome)..

I do not know if this really works or not, but I have heard of people hanging a bag from one of those pull up bars .

But it probably would not be very good for Kicks.

Is this they type of free standing bags you are talking about? I have wondered if these would be any good for practicing Muay Thai.

My school has some of the newer ones by Century. I used to hate free standing bags because I could always kick them over. The newer ones seem to be a lot sturdier and stable. I've done some rounds on them and I like them quite a bit. Just make sure it doesn't spring a leak! (the base has to be filled with water)

Freestanding bags are worthless, mainly because they don't teach you footwork. If you really cannot hang a bag, I recommend you find a training partner with whom you can do thai pad work.

I found this in another forum.

“Go to a tire store and ask them for five spare tires all of the same dimensions. Then connect them together by drilling through the side walls and placing a bolt to hold each tire together. Finally, put some weight into the base. One method is to put a board along the base and then pour concrete in to the bottom tire. Walla, you can kick it, hit it with a stick, etc. Cost will be less than $10.00 plus an afternoon of labor.”

Do any of you think this would be realistic for training Muay Thai kicks?

In my gym, we have some tires for kicking, but it is only one tire attached vertically to a pole. It is fairly similar to kicking a leg. It does not seem like kicking a stack of horizontal tires would do the trick.

In my gym, we primarily use pole bags. These are poles cemented into concrete with the heavy bag on the out side of the pole. They are about nine feet tall with bag all the way to the floor. Do you also think that these are inferior for learning footwork?

A hanging bag swings when you hit it so you're practicing moving with the bag while maintaining your balance as much as you're practicing your strikes. Of course, the bag has to have enough room to hang and swing freely for this. Stationary bags are far from "useless"; there are lots of things you can practice on them. They aren't the same as a hanging bag but if that's what you have to work with you can still accomplish a lot.

I'll see if I can hang a bag in one way or another, otherwise I'll go with a freestanding..I'm kind of suprised that noone hasn't thought of using vakuume to hang the bag..I'm gonna do some research

The problem with using a vacuum would be that the container with the vacuum inside would need to be bolted to the ceiling anyway, so wouldnt really help matters. If thats not what you had in mind please let me know, always ready to listen to new solutions to engineering problems.
What i think you have in mind is like a piston, with the bag attached to one end and the other fixed to the ceiling so when the piston is drawn out by the weight of the bag, the drop in air pressure inside it stopped it coming out. That would be expensive, difficult to construct, and would still need bolting to the ceiling. Was it something else you had in mind?

It's kind of hard to explain, especially in english but I'll try. What I'm thinking of is a "sucking" device like the ones used to lift heavy glass windows etc..I wonder if it's possible to "suck" one of them suckers on the ceeling and then hang a bag from it..Just a thought :/

Cunning! I like the idea a lot actually. Wont work for a couple of reasons, the sucker would need to be enormous to support the weight and probably not made out of a cheap plastic, you would need a perfectly smooth horizontal surface above you (like a glass window in the floor) that is not likely to happen, and glass does not handle stress or strain well. Far too brittle.

Ceiling light fixtures are connected to studs. You should invent a light fixture that can hold a punching bag. Then you will not have to drill any additional holes. hahahah

If you invent it, you have to give defent.net royalties. ahahahaha.
