  • Combat Thaiboxing?

Hey, this is just a general question to the Thaiboxing community, Has anyone seen the movie "Ong Bak the Thai Warrior" i purchased this movie on a whim and I was every surprised, I was expecting the usual ESPN kickboxing stuff but this guy was doing moves that were very unusual. When I asked a fairly experienced local martial artist he informed me that he had seen it and what was being used was called "combat" Muyai Thai, any thoughts?

Its not called "Combat" MuayThai, though I guess I can understand why it could be viewed that way. The most popular term for it is "MuayBoran". What Tony Jaa (the actor in Ong Bak) was doing was a Hollywood-ized version of the older bareknuckle styles of MuayThai (before it became a real ring sport). There were many of these older bareknuckle styles. The names and the techniques used varied from region to region.

Two of the older styles I'm aware of are called "MuayChaiya" & "MuayKorat". The term "MuayBoran" is merely a blanket term that refers to all the older styles of Muay, although in the last 20 years or so "MuayBoran" has started to be taught as its own style. (refer to the "MuayChaiya" thread)

I train in the modern Sport MuayThai. However, after talking to my Thai coach, we believe that the MuayThai he learned is from the MuayChaiya lineage, and we've been starting to study that system so as to give our students a more fulfilling training experience.

There is a form of combat muay thai for the military. Most foreigners just make up terms like this though and fabricate systems. Went and trained in it some in thailand and the stuff was real good. It was born primarily from the old krabi krabong systems and modernized forward again v giordano is the best source for this since his expertise is combatics and real world functionality.

              george...

I was discussing this with my Ajarn today. What do the Thai's call the military combat system? I've heard conflicting stories about this. I've heard it referred to as Lerdrit, but I've also heard that is an incorrect term....

              Thanks!
