Well Sapphire, I would say join either Jistu or Judo, and also join kickboxing. At first go to kickboxing once, and the soft art twice a week till you're proficiant at rolls and falls and are getting the idea behind the motion. Then switch to 2 times a week kickboxing and one of the soft art to hamer the more explosive skills while not loosing the sweeps, throws, grapling, and fancy little defence tricks.

Sapphire do you know the Beautiful Boxer in Thailand??

Sapphire if you want some awesome Muay Thai that would totally work for you then you need to meet Nong Toom the Beautiful Boxer. Thai fighters are known as soft- smooth as silk and as hard and tough as a diamond. Nong Toom is so SOFT it freaks me out, in fact many get freaked out BUT Toom has beaten top fighters from all over the world and Toom is fighting in Japan in June 2006. Feel free to e-mail me directly doc@muaythaifairtex.com.
Sa-wut dee krup and Phra-JAO-phra-uay-porn, Doc.

Nong Toom is now a woman. I believe she is focusing on teaching women now as well? Quite relevant.

            Someone has some manly problems??

"Worst example ever" clearly exposes IGNORANCE. Nong Toom is the best example of the SOFT side of Muay Thai. I saw Ramon Decker fight a young up and coming Thai Fighter and he lost. This Thai was so SOFT and smooth that the Tough and Hard Romon could NOT strike him. Ramon tried so hard but then when he missed the Thai always countered. True Muay Thai fighters are as Soft as Silk and as Hard as a Diamond when need be. Nong Toom is teaching women now, Toom is as Soft as Silk and can be as Hard as a Diamond when it is only needed. Nong Toom is one of my best Thai FRIENDS, most have NO clue about Nong and to me it is a shame that so many are quick to judge because of their own misguided self images.

I have nothing against transvestites,i was saying it was the worst example ever because we were expecting you to tell us about a woman champion or a good example of a sucessful woman thai boxer...the fact that you came up with a shemale, well it was just weird and funny at the same time..no offense man

Im sure she/he is as good as you say.

Sapphire, I suggest that you look over Muaythai Plaza Gym located at the Lumpinee night bazaar next to the Lumpinee muaythai stadium. It is right next to the under ground train station, so getting there should be a breeze. Training in Thailand at a good camp will get you proficient very quickly, since it's one on one. Pad work should constitute the heart of MT training where your trainer will guide you along. Check to see that the gym doesn't do touristy thing like goup training or mostly bag work. Incidentally, don't be afraid of MT training or MT sparring. If you do it in Thailand with good gym, you'll not be hurt at all. You should spar with your trainer. He'll correct your bad moves, and guide you along. Let me warn you however that MT training at good gym in Thailand will be very exhausting. I reccommend that you build good lungs and legs before you go, by starting serious jogging right away.
On the side note, Nong Toom is an excellent MT fighter/trainer for women. She is very interested in teaching MT to women, and she will not intimidate her female students. Thai trainers are used to trainig female trainees, so don't worry. Nong Toom used to teach at Muaythai Plaza Gym, but has since moved to Fairtex. I myself train at Fairtex which I believe is the best value gym in Thailand. However, it may not be convenient for you since it is way out from Bangkok. Remember " I'd walk a mile for a camel"? Well, I'd drive 20 miles one way to train at Fairtex. There used to be a fairly decent gym within 5 minutes walk from my house (headed by Kru Jitti at the time), yet I'd drive 3-5 times a week to train at Fairtex. I only trained with Kru Jitti on Sunday when Fairtex was closed, or when my friend would like to try MT training.
Another thing, MT training starts at 7am and again at 3pm, so plan to get there 30 minutes before training commence, so you can get through office check-in, dress up and hand wrap, and warm up for your training.

Nong Toom Prinya has long been one of my idols...she went against the grain and won. I have nothing but complete respect for her. (do you think I could get an autograph???)

I'm a girl and I've a few questions that need answering. I'd really appreciate any help!

I've done a bit of Muay Thai before with my brother. Nothing much though, just the basics.

                    1) I'll be in Bangkok for 2 months during school's summer break (August to September). I wonder if you know any good Muay Thai gym in Bangkok which are girl-friendly? I'm not looking for a proper gym where you train for the whole day though. I want more sort of a 'recreational' gym where I can just pop in for a lesson when I'm free. My goal is for self defense rather than to compete. It doesn't matter if the instructors can't speak English because I can speak Thai!

                    2) Erm... this will make me sound like the biggest wimp ever but I don't particularly enjoy pain, being hit or having a bloody nose. Is it possible to do Muay Thai without sparring? Will I learn anything then?

                    Thanks!
                    Sapphire
The Fairtex gym run by Adjarn Apideh is a good bet. (Apideh was named fighter and trainer of the century by the king)
Also...for the more old school stuff, Buddhai Swan in Ayuttahya is among one of the only places left to learn all of the old thai arts.

Khewsumrit gym or Fairtex gym is OK. My customers ever train there. I think you should use equipments like head guard or shin guard to protect yourself to save your body. I think sparring is very important. No fighter can fight without experience.
