  • Church street boxing gym Thai Boxing (NYC)

Hello, I would like to know does anyone know anything about church stret boxing gym muay thai program like who teaches it and there reputation as a club. I just moved back to NYC and am lookin for a real good thai boxing gym most that I checked out has too many sunshine boys. I am looking for a hardcore hole in the all to continue my training here in NYC. Any advice would be helpful.

Also does anyone have info on Ultimate Gym in the city? Thanks

I've met Chris Romulo (coach/fighter) and seen him fight. He's good and he's a cool dude. I think he still trains/coaches there.

Though I have no personal experience with Ultimate Gym, I've heard a lot of negative things about them. Not so much about their actual training, but some of the attitudes people have (especially management types).

My only recommendation is try to participate in some free trial classes at the different gyms to determine which training style suits you better.

Jason Strout accually teaches there, I just received an e-mail from them, also it is more of a fitness class than an accual competitive class, but thanks for the info anyway

Look up Kru Nestor Marte, he's in the NYC area.
A while back, Tommy Thai was teaching at Five Points Gym in Soho. I dunno if Simon Burgess is still teaching MT. Look up these names and see what you find.

Nestor Marte is Ultimate Gym but someone already said he does not have a good reputation management wise.

I'm planning to take a look see at 5 Points...not too far from Church Street at all. I've heard VERY good things about it, and the website was impressive.

They're offering full weightlifting equipment on site with Muay Thai and Kali instruction.

I took a free class at 5 points, it is a really nice facility, but it was too fancy for me, but thats my opinion, I was not really interested in the gym after the class. One of the guys i was sparring with was complaining that I was going too hard so that was a turn-off for me, come on I am going 50% and the students can't handle it!!!! The guy was supposedly on his competition team not a beginner. I told the instructor Steve that he has a bunch of PU$$ies here, he shrugged his shoulders, didnt have much to say. Check it out I maybe you might like it!!!

Well took that free MT class...it was pretty good as far as meeting my needs. I agree it's a bit fancy, but I think that comes from the gym/fitness center side. I do agree that people seemed to hit pretty light, but I was on the side with beginners so I'm not going to judge based on that.

I'm looking more for a place to refine technique and improve general conditioning so I'm happy about what I got. The kali lessons are a big plus as I've been having a ridiculously hard time finding a reputable kali place in Manhattan.

It's also nice to train at a place with decent solid heavy bags for once, I was training the past year exclusively on Thai pads and freestanding Wavemasters the TKD school let me use.

If it fits you do it, everyone has diffrent opinions and diffrent experiances, Iam just used to going real hard in training and sparring. The kali program is pretty god from what I heard.
