  • Master Sken (Muay Thai)

Here is a very nice tutorial for Master Sken when he apply the "Climbing downward elbow"

What do you think about this move ? do you think it's only in training or it can be applyed in real fight ?

Sken is an amazing guy, and I could see a potential application of jumping off their knee and hitting them with the downward elbow on the way down.

But stepping onto their shoulder? That guy had to stand still and prepare himself to take the weight. That is not exactly a high percentage technique in my book!

I concur. jumping off their knee and hitting them with the downward elbow on the way down is a fundamental MT move, but MT fighters simply jump high to execute the elbow down on opponent's head.

I actually teach that technique at seminars for fun. It make a great encore after hours of MuayThai fundmental techniques. People love the break from the drudgery to do something fun....

But I always tell them, you will NEVER use this technique in a real-life situation, whether it be on the street or in the ring....

          NEVER

This technique actually is doable, but it requires the perfect setup. Personally, I think it is taught more for its historic relevancy. This is how NaiKahNomTom defeated the last Burmese that he fought, after front-cutting the right leg and then repeatedly hop-around kicking the left thigh to force the Burmese to his knee. If done properly, this makes for a very beautiful and exciting demonstration of muay Kacheuk. Most people don't take it to its conclusion, and rarely do you see anyone do the shoulder step. There is another picture of it in the krabi-krabong thread.

It's very doable in the ring. I've seen it done several times by both Thais and farang ( foreigners). However, it's best executed when you've completely dominated your opponent, and he is exhausted. Same for many MT fundamental moves.

In the weekly Thai fights that I would get from the local Thai market, I did see one guy attempt to pull it off in the ring. He got the step up on the knee, but his opponent fell back into the ropes which messed up the finish. But it was still cool to watch the set up and attempt.

Thanks guy for all your reply ....

i think we all agree that this move is just to fancy to be applyed in a real fight , but look's cool ...

it can be a nice move to teach after 2 hours of training ... and be4 they leave to the house

I've always thought (deep down) that these stepping up moves of MuayThai are doable, but I've never seen anyone really try. Besides, I always tell my guys that these moves should never be used mainly because I want them to focus on their fundamentals rather than get distracted by the flash.....

You have to remember that Sken is more ex TKD rather than MT.

The legendary Abhidej Sithirun was also member of regional champion takraw team. He told me that the kicks in takraw are very similar to MT kicks.
