  • Weight training in Thailand?

My question is: I still believe in the old fashoined ways of training in Muay-Thai/Boran. In that I mean push-ups/sit-ups, squat thrusts etc.. Basically utilizing my body weight for a good workout in co-operation with my Thai stuff & Silat. With alot of these UFC/K-1 guys, you see alot of them spending hours in the gym, because of that, has training in Thailand changed? Do Thai gyms now want to incorporate weights into their regimen in the way alot of American/European fighters do? Just curious.......Mark

We had weights at our camp, old rusty dumbbells, no fancy machines or anything. The weight training wasn't a major focus though - I wouldn't say it was incorporated the way it is in the US/Europe.

Muay Thai Gyms in Thailand arent influenced by UFC and K1 because they arent exposed to it. The Thais know a few of the K1 stars but thats about it.
The know Buakaw in K1 max and the Thai guys like Kaokai in the K1 and maybe read in Muay Siam newspaper when they fight.
The guys are loose huge amounts of weight each fight so big weight programmes are much good to them. Most gyms have chin up bars, a few dumbells, barbells maybe and maybe an old multi gym. Usually after training in the evenings they may spand 30 minute doing weights.

Yeah, I didn't think they would be influenced from UFC guys & such. I'm glad to see some things stay to the old-school hardcore ways of training. Thanks for the replies....Mark

It's all part of the same thing

The real reason why bodyweight exercises are such a big part in so much of martial arts classes is because it costs no money and practically no equipment to do them, but ultimately resistance is resistance no matter what the tool being used. The MMA guys do the bodyweight stuff aswell and get the best of both ways which is the best way i reckon.
