  • The round(house) kick

I'm a TKD gal, my roundkicks are (in essence) pick up leg cocked, point knee at target and pull the trigger. It's OK, I can stand on one leg for a long time...

However, someone here mentioned the *Muai Tai Style* and I got to wondering...how exactly is that? not so much lower leg work and more from the hip?

I'm not 100% sure but I think thai boxers just swing the whole leg from the hip and make contact with the shin. It's so powerful that if they miss their target they end up doing a 360 spin.

In my experience the Thai roundhouse is more powerful than the TKD roundhouse because the shin hurts more.

Thanks! That was pretty much the mental image I had!

It's "Muay Thai" guys. "Thai" not "tai." :P

In the Google video, why does the pad holder jump back??

During my TKD white belt and yellow belt phase, my kick was structured just as described by Granfire. It was the way it was taught and I wanted to follow the program.

After a while though, it just slowly evolved into a Thai style without any premeditation on my part, but just because I wanted to connect sooner.

I found that the small amount of time it takes to chamber the kick telegraphs your intentions and the opponent moves out of range or pre-empts your kick.

Thanks for the vid, I especially like the instruction "Kick with your instep where it connects with your ankle." <>> I also like the foot jab vid especiall the quote " It is almost exclusively defensive"

At class today, the guy holding the pads kept saying he could see it coming a mile away whenever i roundhoused. Then he showed me to make it quick, you lift up the leg vertically like a tkd front kick and at the same time twist at the hips, then quickly screw the leg into horizontal position at impact. I've just been swinging mine like a baseball bat , and his way makes sense but not the way i was taught. Thoughts? It's a hell of lot quicker, didn't notice a huge loss in power.
