  • Thai Bag

Sup I was thinking about buying a standard thai bag. 6ft 14x72 100lbs I think was the stats. The things basically sold by Titleboxing.com. My only concern is that if I was gonna set it up I'd do it in my spare room that currently is loaded with garbage (I mean wall to wall walk ontop of things to get into it.) Of course I'd clear it out and thats a bit oblivious to my point. The room is kind of small, now I'd of supplied measurements to the room but at the moment I can't get into it to measure it lol. Yeah... by the looks of it if I stood in the center of the room and fully extended a leg I'd have maybe a good 2-3 feet room between my foot and the wall. I'm worried about the concept of me hitting the bag hard enough to send it flying into the wall and since it's 100 lbs that wouldn't be too hard to break it seeing that my wall is redicously soft. Dry rock or what ever it's called. Do you think there is anyway that I could weigh it down or if it's even all that simply to make a thai bag fly into a wall like that (Yeah I know power of the kick and punch etc but still). I was told I hit rather hard and was planning on using it to practice my low kicks and teep perticularly thats why I am concerned.

Thats probalby the bag I'd buy so yeah. Also if you know of any better thai bags feel free to post those too! Alsoooooo if it turns out I would hit the wall if I kicked too hard is there anything I could buy like a steel plate for the bottom or something to keep it remotely stationary?

    Thanks!

Oh yeah, 1 last thing. I thought of another place I can hang it up. I got these wooden arches in my house and in one spot there is plenty of room on each side of the arch, and the best part is the whole arch is solid wood so I was wondering if there is something that I could get that is something like a D ring. Basically I want something really subtle because I got the arch painted white and I don't want something huge and gawdy making it look hideous. Preferrably something like a little knodge to put in the wall, I can plug in the D ring into it when ever I am gonna practice and pop it out easily so I can take the bag down.

      hello,

well the obvious first question is "do you have an academy you train at?". if so, just use thiers.

so lets assume you don't, or you are just an 'ard bastard with lots of energy... you needn't worry about sending your bag flying. remember, there is a lot of ways to use a bag to train.

      elbows, knees, teep, punch.

if you really are pressed for space (or have fears about the structure of your dwelling), get one of your buddies to train with you and use a power pad instead.

this post doesn't exhaust your options, just wanted to give you the general idea. holler back if you have questions.

      thanks.

Yes, but it's like a mc dojo due to lack of options so they suck.

Teep is one of the main things I'm worried about with movement. Another problem is that I've measured how far my kick would reach and the ample range needed for the bag + my body so I can rotate and move propperly. I really am pressed for space baddly.

As for buddies, I've already tried that. I have thai pads, punch mits, and a shield pad but my friends are like fruity and don't want to do anything cause their fat and lazy. So yeah, I'm kind of screwed in a manner. I've even posted previously on this forum for a partner but that went nowhere lol. Thanks anyway though.

          hello,

well, mcdojos do suck. as for teep, you are in luck. just use a sturdy wall somewhere. like a nice concrete wall. if the room you have is a bit too small, maybe you could spring for an outdoor stand? maybe some of your fruity friends can pitch in to help you get one? like a birthday or christmans present?

yeah. it is reaching a bit. hopefully this helps even a little bit.

          thanks.

That's a specialty bag. At Thai camps it's usually known as "grasop dtae kah" which means literally "bag for leg kicks". Many Thai camps don't use them, but at those that do you'll notice that the indentation on the bag is almost exclusively at thigh height. If you use it that way (just for practicing leg kicks) the bag shouldn't swing more than a couple of feet or so.

A bag stand that you put outside sounds like the way to go except if you live in a place that snow during the winter. Also you can buy a free standing bag and just roll it outside to use then roll it back inside when you are done.

Can't do the teep on a wall, I got dry wall. Also, even if I do it to a support beam I just got that feeling that I should stop lol, know what I mean? As for the outside bag, no. I have cement ground outside so barefoot = no, not to mention I just would rather practice in privacy.

I think I struck a nerve with one of my friends though, I might be able to persuade him into doing some pad work but he is the real ignorant type. Ya know what I mean "Fight like a man, kicks are for girls!" If he ever agrees I'll just teach him typical western boxing techniques, but when he holds for me I'm gonna rock him with the first thai kick I throw lol.

Thanks for everything though guys, any other recomendations would be greatly appreciated. I even read something in a title boxing magazing about a ground weight that is portable and is about 30 lbs when filled with sand, any info on that?

                    er......

hope you and your friend have fun training.

                    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

Not really, just noticed it while skimming through the magazine. It was like a little bag, looked like you attach it to the bottom of a heavy bag.

                        hello,

OOOOOHHHHH!!! yeah. have seen several versions of those. they seem to keep the bag from swinging (as much). that way the bag has some "drag" without actually dragging on the ground and damaging the heavy bag.

have not used one personally, so not sure how effective they are. will ask around for you.

                        thanks.

Couldu that actually deal any damage to me? Just thought of this now but taking into consideration the thai style of kicking (kick through, not to).
