No knee and elbow(to the head) no Muay Thai,
so it wasnt really a Savate vs Muay Thai bout.

I agree with Ghost to they were novice fighters around 3-5 fights imho.

I love Savate and think that a Savate practicioner could give major problems to a Nak muay given experience level etc being the same and the Savate fighter understanding Knee And Elbow ranges.

In the limeted Savate ive seen i notice that they do use their shin to kick with even though i belive its not in the rules?.

you are right mate, one of my friends is the savate european champ, its a good system and is a shoes on style where they use the tip of the shoe sometimes in round kicks or the foot if without shoes. works quite well but lacks any real close range ability other than punching.

good system overall though and savate fighters should be respected in the ring. glad to see someone with thai boxing/ring knowledge can see these guys are complete novices.

        I am loving it.

They have no knees and elbows. That is why I like MT better. The punches are real good. They use shoes, without them the kicks are not as great but still you can do some damge.

The savate guy is Michael Giordani, a 2x French champion that teaches savate out here in LA. I think that this is an old fight from several years back. The guy working his corner is Nicolas Saignac, an amazing savateur and French champion as well. Nic used to teach at the Inosanto Academy and worked heavily with Erik Paulson and Chad Stahelski during their formative years.

Savate doesn't get the credit that it is due. It is an amazing martial art. I think at the kickboxing range, it is superior to muay Thai minus the clinch. IMO, if you take two guys with equal amount of time training and fights (one in savate and the other in muay Thai) and have them go at it without knees and elbows, the savateur wins every time. The average savateur has better punches, superior footwork and upper-body movement and a greater array of kicks than the average Thai boxer. However, if you mix the two (a la STX kickboxing created by E.P. & C.S.) then the hybrid is bad-ass indeed.

Thaiboxing should stay Thai and Savate should stay French. Damn the hybrid -it ain't right....jk.

Savate is alot like tae kwon do, isn't it?

Muay thai is far superior. Savate is still stuck in the snap kick stage. There are many more issues, but that one is enough to end the argument.

Don't get me wrong, savate is a good striking art, it's just not on the same level as muay thai. I also believe savate to be inferior to boxing also.

Just watched the video, and I HAVE TO concur with Ghost... these are not "highly ranked champions", these are novice-intermediate level fighters.

The snap kicks are only a part of Savate, they are there because of the shoe which i belive has a hard tip on it.

I have seen the Savateur use lunge kicks to good effect and also follow through kicks with the shin as in Muay Thai(though i belive that may be against the rules).

The evasive and general defensive skills in Savate are also very good,it is not easy to nail them with a good shot.

If any body thinks Savate is not a good fighting sport then try getting in the ring against a good opponent,i belive you may change your mind.

That statement is in no way at all ignorant, obtuse or downright dense.

If what I've heard about Savate being designed for use in old ship to ship combat and steel toed boots is true, I'd take the shitty snap kick with steel toed boot over my shin any day.
Obviously different when it's in ring circumstances, but face it, you're more likely to have shoes ON than off if you ever end up in a fight you didn't have weeks/months to plan, prepare, and diet for.
                          Different requirements, different solutions.

Of course it isn't. If it was, it would have come from someone else.

From the small amount of Savate I have studied, vs my Thai experience, I feel they have different agendas. The bulk of modern Savate training and competition is geard towards "Assaut", which is light technical contact. These fighters are very skillfull and athletic, but they have a different goal to the Thai fighter, who essentially wants to nail you to the canvas. Therefore if you put most modern Savate competitors in the full contact Thai ring, I think the outcome would be pretty one-sided.

That said, still lovin that guy's head kick in the original vid!
