    well 17 isn't to old to start and be good at it. I started at age 16. Now i'm a instructor and have some of the top fighters in state and nation training under me and i'm also a author of 2 martial arts books.

      Don't worry about what others think of you - any gym worth going to welcomes beginners and veteran will be willing to work with you. If you notice huge egos walking around, you might want to think about finding another gym.

      17 is definitely not too young...you aren't even fully grown yet. The earlier you start the better. I'm 24 and my flexibility (or lack of) seems to be the biggest limiting factor in my improvement (with conditioning following closely behind that). The younger you start the easier your body responds to new training/techniques.

        lol i have to say something...i started when i was 15 =] lol ye but anyway, i felt the same way. the answer to that: go with a mate! its wat i did. it helps wen partnering up for the first time and stuff like that!

          Kinda disagree...I find that I do better when I work with a better person on the other side of the pads, as opposed to someone equally new as you are. They can call me out on my form or knock me in the head if I drop my guard.

          Also, since pad-holding is an art in and of itself, working with a better person forces you to get better with the pads. The better you are with the pads, the more likely that more experienced people will want to work with you, the better you get, and so on....
