  • Resolved Question: Osteoarthiritis of the knees?

I'm 27 and have been diagnosed with OA in my knees, probably from years of abuse snowboarding and thaiboxing...but the pain is getting pretty bad. I've been to my GP, seen 2 osteopaths, been through a course of physiotherapy and even had a consult from a knee surgeon. They all agree that theres not really much they can do to help me...its bad enough to cause me a lot of pain but not yet at the stage where surgery is an option. I've been taking 3000mg EPA fish oil concentrate and 2000 glucosamine sulphate daily for the last 2 years but its not really doing anything. I use topical ibuprofen gel which works for a while but its not a long term solution. If anyone has any ideas for pain relief, I'd be grateful!

First, stop as many offending activities as possible. Running needs to give way to swimming or cycling. Back the advanced mountain runs to intermediate level runs down the mountain on your snowboard. Maybe switch the thaiboxing to bjj. Ice down after all physical activity for at least 5-10 mins, whether your knees hurt or not. Supplement the gel with otc oral aleve (you only have to take it twice daily, rather than 4-6x daily motrin/ibuprofen). You are way too young to be contemplating either a partial or total knee replacement (You'd probably have to have it revised twice, maybe even three times in your lifetime), but ask your primary care doctor about the possibility of a combination lidocaine/cortisone injection. Hope this helps, J~
