I am really wanting to join jorge gurgels gym in west chester ohio to train in muay thai. I have some light boxing background, but have gotten away from it. I'm looking for some advice on how well conditioned I should be before i go and get to training. I am about 10 to 15 pounds overweight since I havent done my usual 2 mile run a few times a week in about 7 months. also I am a smoker, but I can quit cold turkey and get my lungs back pretty quik. I'm 26, has anyone ever been in this situation before? should I just man up and glove up. I want to make the best of my training. any advice will help!
I am 6'2 190lbs. usually around 175 to 180. Good build for muay thai???

You shouldnt be overly concerned with all this. Cut down on smoking as you work on your conditioning. Easy does it, build up and cut down in increments. You are young enough to adapt and get in there and do it.

I would say join up, keep an open mind and realize the breakin period is often the hardest getting the conditioning up to handle the work and developing your techniques.

If you are really not feeling up to it, then my only other suggestion is get some regular boxing training for a month or two because you will be doing alot of the same things outside of the kicks, knees etc. Work on building endurance, get your hands sharp on the pads then slide over into muay thai. Or invest in a jump rope and try to do a little every day or every other day or start running and stretching a bit.

But I would say let go of any misconceptions and negative thoughts and do it!

Muay thai is awesome...very fun...very practical...I love it...
You seem to be the right body type for it...I'm sure you can get back into shape for it just fine...

My best advice to you is...

      HARD CANDY.

Honestly, the stuff helped me out very much when I decided to buckle down and actually stop smoking.
