  • Strikes That You Never Use

    Hey Guys,

Interested in some of the strikes that you never seem to use when sparring or in a actual bout.

As a right hander, i stay away from Left Hooks, i generally feel off balance, exposed and lack a good amount of power to constitute the risk of throwing it.

Left uppercut is another shot that i dont throw. I think this is because i dont train it, so it doesnt come into mind. When i go for a uppercut, i like to feel the weight behind my right. Feels alot more comfortable and natural to use the right rather then my left.

I also knee very rarely, when ever i clinch, i just try and throw my opponent to the matt to try and show some dominance, rather then try and rip some decent body shots.

Thats about all, my legs are generally pretty snappy. Left or right, i use them both.

    What do you struggle with?

I really don't like leading knees, or throwing any type of knee without establishing the clinch...but once I'm there I will generally knee even if there isn't a good shot availabe repeatedly until something opens up. Other than that, I try to work everything when sparring...sometimes making a point of it to try to land a technique I'm not comfortable with at the expense of getting hit a little in the process, so that I become more aware of how to personally implement it and become accostomed to using it.

I also like to mess about a bit, sometimes, as sparring is generally fun. Just last week I took a spinning backfist (of all things) to the mouth because I was being goofy and trying to pull a a gunting (arm scissor) by leaving my head open by getting into an unorthodox style stance (I'll leave it at that). Needless to say, got what I deserved, learned a lesson, and my training partner and I both got a good laugh out of it.
I'd probably train much, much more conservativly if I had a fight coming up, but what the hey...self expression is good too, eh?

In Muay Thai I never use a jab to the body and a right or rear hook to the body.

not saying that all stikes wont come in handy, but through watching video's of me sparring that is what i have noticed. Was wondering if other people do the same.

I've been in dozens and dozens of brawls and sparring matches in my lifetime but I have never used a knife hand strike. (Karate or Judo Chop)

right hook to the body, right uppercut to the head

              does anybody remembers that?

              tyson style

that combo had to kill back in the day

i think that we are starting to see more martial art systems drop some their striking to suit more real life situations. If mma has shown us nothing else, it has shown that to defend yourself, you need to have good striking, grappling, and takedowndefense.

I used that one in sparring, not too long ago - but you have to have your sparring partner pretty much cornered or a sparring partner who moves constantly moves into you - otherwise, he'll just back out and pick you off.

I don't do jump, spinning wheel kicks, flying headbutts or jump off the top ropes...

                      Pinch stuff...

the reaction you can get will ensure he's in a defensive mindset.

I think it's hysterical when guys try this because I mostly target low line structure. Few things make a guy fall faster or harder than someone already off his feet.

well...you don't have the karate chop, so I'm assuming you have the kung fu grip. Otherwise you'll never make GI Joe.
