  • I'm Going to Thailand With NO Experience

Leaving in just a few weeks. Have no Muay Thai experience at all. Always wanted to learn though. Just finished college, have some money saved, economy's in the toilet anyway, so figured why not?

I do have some shoulder issues though which I'm praying to God won't wreck my trip. I really want to learn as much as possible.

You guys got any tips for a first-timer noob in Thailand? My goal is to do a year out there and take a couple of fights toward the end if my body is holding up.

Thats great brother! I saw a lad that had never trained before in Chiang Mai,after 5 days training he had a better shape than people I knew back home had in months of training.

My advice is to research the camps as much as possible, there are so many now that cater for the overseas student new or not, find a good camp you like with a good coach you like and then let them know you will be there up to a year, when they hear that they will know they can work with you and set out a plan of training, also give them 100% effort and plenty of smiles and they will respond in return.

Try not to get caught up in the party atmospere as this will detract from your training big style if overdone.

Plenty of other things I could say but number 1 is research where your going to go and then post again with ideas and im sure others on here will help you as much as possible.

    Good luck.

I think its great you are coming with no experience, it can be a really great attribute. This will be the first martial imprint.

      Keep an open mind.

Pick a muay thai camp you feel an afinity for. It will be your home and your family.

Adapt to the environment and training routine.

Dont get frustrated. Your trainer has been training fighters for a long time, follow what they say even if they ask you to do just a little bit, do it and polish it as best as you can.

Every question will be answered in time.

Contribute to your camp, show some kindness, maybe pay for stuff here and there, maybe bring them some shirts, photos go a long way since most cant afford a camera.

Absorb, go to the fights, watch the top guys in the camp, they can help you endlessly once they see you are dedicated and committed.

Enjoy yourself, thailand and everything it has to offer.

Before you leave, figure out the visa you need, dealing with money, etc, maybe a few suggestions for camps----

        thanks a lot guys

I already have a camp picked out. I'll be going to True Bee gym in Pai. It received very good feedback at muaythailand.com and is in an area where I won't be so tempted to spend my money on girls and booze. I'm not really a big nightlife kinda guy anyway. I already have my one year ED visa (which they helped me get with a letter), my vaccinations, and this weekend I'm buying my plane ticket. I'm also planning on opening up a bank account in Thailand to put my money, that way I won't get owned every time I use an ATM.

I might stop at some other camps at some point. Chay Yai gym in Chiang Mai for instance, and Sinbi if I make it down to Phuket. Really I'd like to stay in Pai though. I'm on a very tight budget.

I think I will bring some shirts for the trainers. I'm from Hawaii so I think I'll get them something with waves or hula girls on it from the swap meet (most people enjoy that kinda thing). I also heard whiskey is a good gift, but I'd feel somewhat strange doing that.

Thats a great attitude your taking with you bro,the trainers will appreciate the gifts(especially the whiskey).

                  What a great thread.

A young guy with a solid attitude taking a great first step in his journey, and getting advice and encouragement from very experienced people.

This is everything that is positive about martial arts forums.

                  Best of luck my friend.

Congratz man. Absorb everything you can. This is something I have always wanted to do. I am saving up and either going to train MT in Thailand or Sambo in Russia after HS.
