Hey guys,
I'm new here and if his thread seems redundant, my sincere apologies. I've been training in Muay thai for 2 years now; however, the style I train under is more of a dutch-european style which involves much more boxing and footwork than traditional thaiboxing. Often in MT vs Boxing threads, the arguments usually made are that Low Kicks and clinch work should be used to counter boxers. However, the scenario I'm about to present has a sort of an MMA twist to it. Suppose if we were to replace boxing gloves with MMA gloves and made the bout between a thai boxer and a boxer, who do you think would have the advantage? The fight permits, punches, kicks, knees, elbows, a 10 sec clinch and no ground work. The fight is scheduled for 3, 3 min rounds.
In my opinion boxers would hold a definite advantage here. I think a boxers hand speed and the lack of restrictions of a 16 oz glove provides them the ability to be better headhunters. Not to mention that 4 oz mma gloves lead to knock outs faster due to the easier access of 4 oz gloves. I believe boxing gloves simply provide more defense; therefore, it takes a longer time to ko an opponent.
I have also noticed that many MMA and K-1 fighters are adding boxing to their regiment in order to become better fighters. I think one of the reasons Tyrone Spong is such a successful MT fighter is because he has better hands
than most Thaiboxers. In fact, he had been offered a contract in boxing after training with Floyd Mayweather Sr.
Anyways thoughts, opinions?
Again if this thread is repetitive or in the wrong section than I sincerely apologize as I am new here.
