hello have a question see if some one can answer it or opinions. why do you point your toes down when you knee? ive been told both ways to point down and straight foot? and cant really see wich one is better?

Keeping your foot forward tenses the muscle over the shin to protect the bone. Having your toes pointing down. Leaves it open for possible damages also it will be loose and more prone to throw you off balance. Point your foot straight when lifting the knee. This should have been covered thoroughly when learning about checking and blocking. Hope this helps.

When throwing a knee strike, you point your toes as it relaxes the muscles along the front of your leg which allows for a smoother, better penetrating strike.
In regards to using the knee/shin to block, I've learned both ways.... raising the foot or pointing the toes. I've heard good arguments for both. I honestly believe the real answer boils down to a matter of preference.

Yes both ways work its like you said it all boils down to preference

One of the things about kneeing I learned in thailand is that they really wanted you to keep the leg in a tight v, meaning toes down and your heel pulled tight to your butt as possible then explosively drive. On shin blocking--it was always taught like an "L" toes up, even in the bare knuckle stuff, it was the same. I didnt see anyone as far as i can remember teach the shinblock with toes down in thailand but thats not to say it isnt taught or used, its just not in my experience did i run into anyone who did it toes down or flat.
