  • Kickboxing footwork

    Hi everybody,

I am new to the forum so wanted to say a quick hello! I am 26 years old, from Portugal. I am beginning to learn kickboxing and my trainer told me that I need to turn my feet whenever I throw a punch (jab, hook, cross or whatever)...as this will allow me to put more force into the punch. The only thing is that this feels very unnatural to me...and I havent seen everyone else doing it...is this normal practice for kickboxing??

    Thanks for your help!

Hi, turning your feet and your hips is normal when you box to generate more power. It is unnatural at first but it becomes natural with practice. Sometimes you cannot see the movement because it is minimal-but it's there, sometimes you can see it clearly, that depends on the situation.

      Hi Tee Sok,

Thanks for your advice! I guess thats it - at the moment maybe I am trying too much to create this movement...I should focus more on the punch and footwork as a single movement?

The first lessons can present difficulties to everybody, I still remember mine! Thinking about letting the breath out when punching, turning the feet, bringing back the arm back to protect the jaw and ribs....I mean it's like everything, when you learn how to drive you think about many things at first and then it becomes natural.

As you said, the outcome is the overall movement. And also coordination. I am sure your coach will guide you through all the steps. It's all patience and hard work especially at the beginning but it pays you back.

Thanks again Tee Sock! Yeah it feels like a million new things at once (plus remembering to keep my chin protected etc...)...so many different things to tell the body to do! Practice makes perfect tho hey?

Yeah! I advise you to hop when you turn your foot as in muay chaiya! It'll make your moves explosive and make you an animal in power!
You don't need to care about a good looking stance/position when it comes to fighting, afterall the moves of a strongest fighters won't look good, but it'll look weird!

it is that wierdness that dips the opponent into a sea of fear!

No one fears muay chaiya. So why would anyone do such a foolish thing? Go fight a muay thai guy in lumpini and let me know what day you will be there to fight so i can videotape it.

hi gonzo dude! I guess sea of fear must be somewhere near sea of love but i'm not sure about its exact location!

what i said above was just an opinion, if you want to accept it, then i'll hope it'll be helpful for you as it is harder to attack someone who hops(coz you can change direction anywhere your foot points)than someone who SLIDES!(as you're learning kickboxing, its harder to escape from a kick by SLIDING)

anyway its all comes under personal preference!

when everyone's doing the same, why don't you try something DIFFERENT !

Hopping is better than SLIDING in the ring or in a real fight????????????????
And your opinion is based on what? actual fights, sparring, what????????

OK, grasshopper. Pass the weed you are smoking

well! No ONE fears MUAY THAI too! Muay thai becomes something like a fitness program rather than a fighting style! Even women are misusing it! LOL!
IT'S DEADLY BUT not THAT DEADLY! But chaiya is! Bcoz of its tight elbows!

Stance is THE most importan thing in Muay Thai in my opinion, and second is how you hold your guard, third how you step, foundation, balance, structure so important.
