tang means set-up. pang, ive never heard. maybe he was trying to make a bang sound. or, ancient Thai warriors used to yell chang when they were engaging in combat

I am just a mere amateur, so take my comments in stride.

I learned to yell tang with the knee, and ash with the kicks elbows.

I am unsure what they mean, but my instructor told me they are also meant to invoke fear in your opponent.

Imagine receiving a hard round kick and hearing ASH! What are you going to do when you hear ash again?

        Associate the terms with pain.

From what I've been told, Tang means "Stab". Which I guess is appropriate

            from the horse's mouth

I asked Ajarn Chai this weekend during the Princeton seminar, and he said that "tang" is spelled the same way in Thai as "stab". I did not ask him about "ash", but he left me with the impression that it was supposed to scare the shit out of your opponent.

Pang means expensive. Tang mean stab.

I wonder if "stab" is a litteral translation and if there is an implied or connotative meaning behind the word. I was watching a Sok Mongkol fight the other night (he's a lefty with a heavy left kick) and I can't count how many times the announcers said "Tang Saai!"

What was peculiar though was that they wouldn't necessarily say "Tang Saai!" when Sok Mongkol through a left straight knee. Mostly they would say it when he would throw his jack hammer left kick.

Anybody know the answer to this riddle?

I'd bet the commentators on that Sakmongkol fight were saying "Kang" instead of "Tang". Kang means shin, so if he was throwing his left kick...

                            Sir (Bryan),

Thanks for the hint. Have you seen many Muay Thai fights where the commentators say that ("Kang"). So if I were to say "Kang Saai!" it would be like saying Left Shin which would really be like saying "what a great left kick!"?

                            Thanks again sir.

                              Brian,

Your parents spelled your name wrong, it should have a "y"

I'm just another cat who lives and breathes this stuff, still learning something new all of the time. I'm just Bryan, you don't have to call me sir. I know you're being respectful, and I appreciate that, and coming from a TBA lineage, it's something that Ajarn has instilled in us-but heck man-you've got to admit-an internet message board is a pretty informal place.

                              anyhow-which Sakmongkol fight was this?

                              take care,

                              Bryan

                                Bryan,

I would love to reply at greater lenght but the Mrs. and me are off to San Francisco for a little time together. I'll be sure to write more when I get back this weekend.

But I am very interested in continuing this conversation. Until then, there were a number of Sakmongkol fights actually. I don't remember all the opponents but here were a few. My friend Tongsai made me a best of tape.

                                Sakmongkol vs. Orono
                                Sakmongkol vs. Ryan Simpson
Sakmongkol vs. Some poor guy from Andy Hug's Camp
Sakmongkol vs. Some guy from Peter Aert's original Camp (Chuckriki or something like that)

Hope to talk to you soon.
