  • To Fight or Not To Fight... That is the question.

    O.k. so here's the latest....

Previously I fought Matt May in Nampa Idaho and lost a fishy unanimous decision. This Saturday (September 14th) was to be my shot at redemption. I was supposed to rematch him in Salt Lake City Utah, on my home turf. But for whatever reason... (outside of an injury), Matt has pulled out of the fight.

Now I am faced with a dilema. The fight promoters have found a new opponent for me however, he weighs in at approximately 149 lbs. I am a measly 143 on a full stomach. And no further details about this fighter are available at this time. So, To Fight or Not To Fight... That is the Question.

How many of you with ring fighting experience would take this fight?

Just so you know my background. I have been training pretty hard for this fight for about 2 and half months. It would have been longer but I was already in decent shape from my last fight and the Oregon Thai Camp.

I've trained for two fights previous to this one and actually fought in one. The other I pulled out of due to a shattered eye socket. So, that's where we stand...

What would you do sirs and mams?

Hey, and since I just saw another post with this idea, I might as well toss this one out to see if I get lucky.

If there are any amature Muay Thai Fighters out there that would like to fight on Saturday September 14 at no more than 145 lbs. and with no more than 4 fights under their belts, I would appreciate the opportunity. You can contact me via e-mail at bayamasaki@earthlink.net or you can call the Muay Thai Institute of Kunponli at 801-474-3136

    Brian,

I wouldn't be worried about his weight, but I would earnestly seek further details on his fight record. Can you get the straight scoop on how many wins/losses/ko's he has?

There are dirty games that happen in the process of setting up a fight, and you would do well to be wary of doing this without some help. As an example, Tony Cassius had a record of 2-0. Promising young fighter needing experience. Well, he got matched up with a guy from Thailand that had a 2-0 record. What they DIDN'T tell him is that this guy also had a record of 57-2-1 in Thailand. That wasn't a fair match up. And, of course, the results weren't pretty.

I would stand your ground on this one and ask for more information. If the promoters are reputable they should give it to you.

      Hey Brian,
I'm with Terry. I think the weight may not be as important as his record. Where does he train? What is his name? Look you trained your butt off for this fight I saw you at camp) and just cause the other guy got cold feet doesn't mean that all the time and effort you have put into this should be lost on that chicken! You are prepared and ready to fight. Do what you have trained to do! Let me know if I can help find out more about the guy ok? It's a perfect day to say..."Let's Roll"!

        Bryan,

Hey... Thanks for the compliment. I was just trying to keep up with your effort (at the camp). You're an inspiration to me. It's awesome to know that you can have a family, work and still knock it down when need be.

I'm working on following your example and that of legends such as Khuen Khru Greg Nelson. It's the real pinnacle of living in the Martial Arts. To find the balance between family and fighting or at least training.

It never ceases to amaze me how many sharks are crusin around in these forums. Pretty cool!

Anyway... I found out that the guy supposedly hasn't had any Muay Thai fights yet... That is not to say he hasn't fough before though. Matt May, the guy I fought before had a record of 2 and 0 but that was just his Thai Boxing record. He had had 10 or so boxing matches and a couple kickboxing fights as well.

I don't know how many fights outside of Muay Thai he's had. I also told the organizers that if the guy doesn't get down to 145 lbs. I won't fight him... Although, I'll probably end up doing so anyway. I want to fight so badly I can litterally taste it.

I believe in what we learn in the TBA, I have complete faith in the instruction we recieve. I feel that I can hold my own against this guy 10 lbs. or no 10 lbs. but then again, Ajarn Chai, told me not to fight guys over 3 lbs. heavier than me... I don't want to go against his advice... man I'm so torn up inside.

            Brian,

the fight you lost to Matt May, was that the competition held at Sidekicks? I can't imagine you getting a 'fishy decision' in somebodies own dojo.....

Email me, I'd like to talk to you about fighting in Idaho.

              You know,

I don't want to make any excuses. I was very happy with that fight. It was my first fight and yes there were a great number of things that I could have done better but I fought hard and I gave Mr. May some things to remember me by. Oh, and yes, that was the one at Sidekicks.

I don't want it to sound like I felt cheated. Matt is a game opponent, he's gritty and takes punishment like a fish to water... he seems impurvious to pain. He did well and I'm not saying that he didn't put up one Hell of a fight. But the fact that the decision was unanimous... I don't feel as if that does the effort I put forth justice.

But that's the fighting game and that's the world we live in. I don't want to sound like an ungracious looser. The chips fell where the chips fell and I moved on. Decisions are something that other people make while they look on from their seats in the stands. What happened in the middle of the ring... between me and Mr. May... That was what was important. Two evenly matched guys duked it out, learned something and enjoyed the experience... at least I did... I hope he did too.

This time though, I feel that the decision was just... of course this time I got the unanimous decision (funny how it's different when you're on the winning side of things). But to be honest, I feel that that score depicted what happened on Saturday. I executed my game plan, which was to move forward at all costs and force a bloody war. What happend however, was that I was able to obtain the prumb and knee. I don't think Mr. May was prepared for that type of battle and thus, I was able to catch him off guard and keep him that way for the majority of the three rounds we fought.

I just hope that I was as gracious in victory as Mr. May was in Idaho. I have a great deal of respect for him both as a fighter and as a person. He has always treated me with respect and conducted himself as a gentleman in all our dealings together.

I wish him well in his future bouts...

              b.

                Jimi,

Thanks for coming and shouting "HOEY!". I wouldn't say I kicked his @$$ though. I fought well and was pretty happy with the improvements I made in my game since last time. But I took some licks too. Mr. May has a beatiful left right combination.

Also, it wasn't me up there. That was just as much your sweat and blood pouring out of my skin as it was my own. All those hours you spent getting kneed, kicked, punched and prumbed. All those times you came out to help this hack keep some of his teeth in his mouth. I look at it as a team victory. I am but clay in the master's hands.

As for fighting... I don't know yet. Muay Thai Institute was talking to me about the possibility of fighting in Las Vegas on the 28th of this month but I'm not sure. My nerves are still settling down to normal and I'm nursing a wierd bruise just above my crotch and below my navel. I must have taken a low knee... it smarts a little.

But if they'll fly me and Khuen Khru Bernales out there... I suppose it might be a real good time. I wonder if we'll be fighting any of the boys out of Master Toddy's stable.

Any Master Toddy guys/girls know anything about it?
