It depends on the style of kickboxing. Many kickboxing styles or schools come from Japanese arts, some from Korean arts, some from Chinese arts. Muay Thai, which is a style of kickboxing, comes from Krabi-Krabong. And before someone objects and tells me that Muay Thai isn't kick boxing :

Muay Thai is known as "King of the Ring" in kickboxing circles

Thai kickboxing developed from ages ago from another martial art (dun really rememebr the name) Western kickboxing developed from peopel like Joe Lewis who didnt like the fact that they could do full contact in tournaments so they invented kickboxing. Both are very different! Only real similarity is the boxing part which to me is different anyways cause of the different stance

Which is better?
Getting back to the question - Which is better?
Very complicated, as some Kickboxing schools are crap, along with many Kararte ones.
Kickboxers move more efficiently. They're fluid, wheras Karate can make people move like a robot.
But Karate has the potential for really brutal striking methods, like kicks to the knee and groin, strikes to the eyes and throat etc. It is just so rare to find a Karate class that trains them though. Karate has too much poncing about doing reverse punches against thin air.
Both have been diluted by commercialism. I'd say that neither is best and, unless you happen to be lucky enough to live near an exceptional club, I'd look elsewhere.

yes the stance is diff in thai kickboxing its actually unique if you wanan calit that. I havent really seen it in many other martial arts, arms above their head, or headlvl, both ankles up and the front foot barely touches the ground for faster exeqution of kicks, they also have a different defence stance one leg comes up into a folded knee, and the elbow and arms connect with it completely coverign that side, the onyl prob. is that if you hit the other leg (the one that they are standing on when blcoking) they go down lol
