    Hulk...

In any Muay Thai event, by any organization, Hooking Sweeps should be illegal, or it is not correct Muay Thai. You also are not allowed to perform takedowns such as hip throws. Basically, if a takedown involves the back of your leg or hip, its illegal.

You have to be kicking forward for your sweeps to be legal. But again, I will reiterate that this is RING application. If you're not training specifically for the ring, then by all means include the full range of sweeps and takedowns.

What do you class as a hip throw?
as we throw using our hip or lifting the guy & twisting all the time in the uk?

Let me describe the Hip Toss that I'm referring to...

Lets say that you step past your opponents right side with your right leg, so that your right leg is behind his right leg, and your right hip or butt cheek is sticking into his right hip. Then pull your opponent to the left across your right leg/hip.

That is the one that I'm referring to. I have always been taught that this type of takedown is illegal in the ringsport of Muay Thai.

On the other hand, if I were to step to my opponents left with my right leg, then pull him across the front of my right leg, that is considered a perfectly legal move.

The main distinction is "hooking" takedowns with the back of the leg.

          Now i understand!!!

Just to add a little confusion iv'e been to a lot of kickboxing shows where our amateur thai fighters have had to fight kickboxing just for experience (they wont fight us at our style obviouslly) & in some kickboxing organisations they allow you to scoop the foot from under them with the inside/sole of your foot (outside to inside movement), have you seen or used this?

Oh yeah! But we typically try the inside to outside movement. But just to make sure we're on the same page...

You are facing your opponent and you are both in an Orthodox stance (left-hand lead). You throw a left kick with the inside of your foot (the arch) to his left ankle to kick it out (scoop it) to the side. Or, you can just reverse it and go right-to-right.

Even though my instructor taught this to me and had us practice it, I typically don't use this myself. I prefer to use a round kick and strike with my lower shin. I have my students practice it both ways.

Sorry, when i said outside to inside i meant that this is the direction the scooping foot is travelling but can catch either leg inside or out (aint got time to look at his foot when the kicks coming in)
