  • Video's of me punching. Judge ME

    Here are 4 short video's of me punching. Please let me know what you think and how i can improve. I have never took any boxing or martial arts. Dont be afraid to tell me what you think. Also is 22 to old to be come good at Muay Thai, as in championships. Thanks in advance

    keep your left foot forward when punching

    work out some combos then practice these (rather than just continuous punching doing first thing that comes into your head)

    try throwing in a few kicks/knees/elbows

    did i see some spinning backhands? dont bother with them, not until youve actualy been taught to do them at least

    CALM DOWN! in that last one you seemed to be just flailing about also when you did two jabs you should do the first jab, bring your arm back to where it started then throw the second. imagine them as two seperate jabs

    only hook with your left hand

    move around, hit the bag from different sides, back out of reach then shuffle forward, hit with a few short range strikes then move away again instead of just standing there

    apart from that im quite impressed. think how good you'll be once youve learned the proper technique

      Crouchtig, thanks for the advice. I will surley take it and work on everything you said. I do look look like Im flailing about, because I am, heh. Just do what does come to my mind. ANyways Ill post some more in about 2 weeks after working on what you told me and who ever else posts. Ill try making the 2 jabs seprate pucnches, Im just throwing one then coming back half way and throwing it again. Thanks, Brandon

        its not just the jab your having a problem with

        you keep doing a punch then trying to repeate it strait away

        REMEMBER:

        1 PUNCH
        2 RETURN ARM TO GUARD
        3 PUNCH AGAIN

        at the moment your punching and then trying to do the same punch when your hand is still out there. if you do that then your basicly just shaking your arm after the punch, there will be no power in the second punch unless you bring your arm back to your guard then start again

          im glad you understand what i meant about the jab. i was worried i hadn't explained it well

          your still doing well for someone with no MA experience

          i used to post stupid posts

          people laughed at me

          "ban butt kissing bastard crouchtig" was one of the threads posted

          all i did was insult the owner of the forum for no reason, tell him it was stupid for kids to do ma then posted a thread saying that kids doing ma was a good idea

          but now ive changed

          all of my new posts are sensible

              The Jeet Kune Do book, "Guide to Training with Martial Arts Equipment" has descriptions of various heavy bag punching drills, etc. that can help you get started. It also has speed bag and double-end bag stuff, too.

                I give you mad props for your efforts! Speed looks decent, but power is hard to tell. When you start sparring you'll be able to judge how effective your power is.

                1. Allways punch from the hands up guard! Keep your hands up at all times. Punch from the hands up position and make sure as one hand leaves to punch, the other is close to your cheek/chin/ear. You leave yourself open when you throw 3+ punch combos. Talk to your boxing coach about this.

                2. Some of your jabs snapped out well, but retracted in a pawing manner. Your jab should come back right away to your guarded cheek/jaw position quickly and easily. Why? Because a decent amateur boxer will capitalize on that pawing back and jab right back or worse throw an overhand. Think explode/snap outward, retract lightly/quickly. ABC-allways be covered.

                3. Boxers punch from a different stance than muay thai. Thaiboxers are more upright and can throw a flurry of straights beautifully, whereas boxers are more crouched,sprung and ready to get inside and exploit angles for hooks/uppercuts.

                Your straight punches looked decent, but you need more body weight transfer on the hooks. Again talk to your boxing coach about this.

                4. Good luck! Even if your over 34 you can fight in 'Masters' category. Go for it.

                  Looks ok ,but looks are deceiving.

                  BC_ ,

                  From what i noticed you have a set rythm with the way you throw your punches.In a real fight but especialy in the ring that could get you killed.

                  Also your punches look like arm punches you'll want to work on twisting the waist ,and getting your body into the blows.

                  other wise you look pretty good to me.

                  just my thoughts though.

                    is 22 to old to be come good at Muay Thai

                    it's around the age where most thai-boxers are in their prime ,but if you train hard and serious you can still have a decade in the sport.I have a friend i know who's 33 he started very late and still does well against thai-boxers in thailand.

                      Thanks everyone for the criticism, i appreciate it. Will I cant work with a boxing coach or MA because the small town I live in, but Im moving to Arizona and taking Muay thai and BJJ, 5 days a week. I will post some kicks, but they look sorry as hell, I wont lie. Do any of you know I site that has a good demonstration or video of Thai Boxing match(kicking technique) The first 3 days I recieved my bag I kicked it, roundhouse low kick and mid kick, but My shins are bruised now and I want to make sure Im doing it right. I dont want to pick up bad habits or injure myself. Also is biking good for muay thai, Rode my bike today 6 miles. It was windy as hell, and harder that usally. ANyways thanks for the great advice and taking the time to post. peace

                          punching form

                          BC: your physical ability looks good, just wild. your improvment will come when you slow down and build your basics. one thing your doing is starting to turn your punch too soon, on your jab and stright right, if your going to twist your hand do it on contact, otherwise as you hit your elbow is not behind your fist, so you have less power, second, make sure that your rear foot is firmly on the ground or as you hit you'll be pushed back. work hard, and work SMART. good luck.

                            I'm not one to be Judge really...but...

                            1) I noticed in one of the videos, when doing a body shot with the hand from the rear, it looked almost as if you were pulling the hand back before punching.
                            This is habit that telegraphs your punch. You should be able to fire out a punch from your gaurd, without any sort of wind-up. I think we've all seen people on the street draw their hand back before they punch, and when that happens, you dont need to call Miss. Cleo to know whats coming next.
                            This is a tough habit, because punches are more stronger when you do this, but it leaves you wide open for a quick jab.

                            2) Sometimes it looked like you were really reaching in some of those combo's, and you head was coming way up to your front foot. You lose a lot of mobility when your head it past your lead foot.

                            3) Whats up with the sweatshirt and shorts thing? Maybe it's just me, but i when i start to get hot, i ditch my sweat shirt before sweat pants.
