  • My "Light contact" fight (report)

Alright... had my "LIGHT CONTACT" fight - here's how it went.

A VERY disorganised event. Im sorry to say.

Told me 5 mins before the start of the event that i was fighting 1st and had to be ready in 10mins... panic - stretch , panic - stretch , combos - panic... calm down.

Get into the ring... appears im fighting LIGHT THAI rules. Low kicks included but no knees or elbows.

My opponent is taller than me. Helluva reach. Alright... prefight nonsense... and the bell goes and we start.

I started LIGHT as it was supposed to be. Hitting his inside leg. Starts throwing HARD straight punches... I so figure "What the ****???" and i start throwing harder ones myself... but IM the one that gets stopped by the ref and warned.

By now im more than slightly irritated that this guy is getting away with his nonsense and IM taking flak for matching the strength of his shots. Got warned when i spinning back punch connected with my forearm.

He never did me much damage... i hit him with a high kick (and got warned) , i hit him with a HARD low-kick (and got warned). when he put pressure on me I threw a lot of punches and he backed off... chased after him but ended up running into his left jab - i backed off on that. Round ends... pretty even i guess.

Round two (tired)... start working his low leg - then he starts to come in with some hard punches (for which he doesnt get warned) - i push him back i throw a dummy right low kick (bring it around to the left side - and keep it there)... he moves in and from my position I smack him in the stomach with a side thrust kick (which echoed through the venue) looks like he's gonna go down but the ref stops... and lets the fight resume.

I mis-block a front kick of his and it gets me in the groin (NONE of the judges saw it - but i sure as hell felt it). But now i reckoned that there was no damn way this was a LIGHT THAI bout). Got a minute to recover (now im very tired)

Start up again - starts getting me with some heavy punches and punch hard back - get him into a corner and connect with a spinning back kick (winds him) - ref doesnt see. He jams an axe-kick of mine (didnt bother throwing any more for the fight - too tiring). End of round. Clearly my round..

Round three (totally drained)... we go at it. basically im trying to read him and counter. Block most of his front kicks. Tagged him with a back kick. Started working his ribs with my middle-kicks. he get REALLY agressives and pounds me with some hard straight punched (ref does nothing) - i wait for a jab - he throws it - i parry and i connect with a pretty hard spinning back punch.(if i put full power into this one it wouldve seriously damaged him)

Falls against the ropes looking all ****ed up. For a second i alsmost move in to finish him off. Ref stops me... warns me and tells me im on the verge of getting disqualified. I dared him to DQ me... was pretty pissed off with him.

Fight resumes. Im too tired. We slug it out. And the fight ends.

By now i realised I had lost the fight. He was getting in too many shots (mainly to the body) and i had probably lost a lot of points with the judges.

So the decision goes to him. I shake his hand... and there is no hard feelings between us.

Im just a little bit disappointed. But i know theres something to learn from it. Keeping my guard up was one of them. My kicks were too telegraphed (bad for LIGHT CONTACT) and my fitness needs attention. I should also throw less kicks since its too tiring.

People reckoned I put up one hell of a fight. I give him credit for being good with his punches. And he was an all-round good sport.

All in all - Im happy. I wasnt overwhelmed by him. For all his power shots I left with only a scratch from his glove when we were in a clinch. He left with a black eye, bruised ribs, a very very noticeable limp. We both apologise afterwards to each other if we got a bit out of hand...

But thats the name of the game. Though sometimes I can be too much of a nice guy.

Sound like a good fight to me (send us clips the usual way) & you done well to control your anger against the ref!!!! Ha Ha (seen this so many times in semi especially if ref local to venue), as i said - any fight is still good experience & by having this semi (laf) fight you can now address your fittness & train for the next.
Just because you got knackered mind doesn't mean your fitness is bad as many fighters loose energy just after the adrenaline rush subsides & also nerves & tension can play a big part on your energy being sapped mid to later in fight (lots of kicks also).
Anyway WELL DONE you done something that many of the population wouldn't have the courage to do but instead stand on the sideline commenting about other people's faults (these people wouldn't get in the ring as long as they have an arsehole between their legs).

anyway (sorry to finish on that note) Blessings from Retired.

      Thanks, Retired.

When my axe-kick was jammed and i decided not to throw any more i thought: "Oh God no! Retired will NOT be pleased..."

The fitness did bugger me around a bit. At one point, especially towards the end, it felt like i was moving underwater. My control was just up to no good.

      ah well

Thanks again mate. Gonna develop my film tommorow and scan em. The video might take a while longer.

Nah the axe kick isn't everything mate, when you said "towards the end, it felt like i was moving underwater" try asking most people who had a hard fight & they will all probablly say the same thing to you.
Anyway have a week off from training now, then just form a plan with your instructor on fitness (might just be nerves though) & maybe add more or different running & cardio vascular exercises to your training and cherish the though of FULL CONTACT!!!!

I tell you what, if the ref were truly being biased against one of my fighters, I'd instruct my fighter to pull out all the stops and go for the KO.

All things considered, it sounds like you really gave a good fight. You need to examine your performance closely now and really learn from it.

          FITNESS IS JOB #1

          Start running...

          LOTS!

            Thanks guys.

Gonna take you advice Khun Kao and start running.

If my fitness were better i wouldve been less foggy in the later rounds - couldve dealt with his attacks better - and couldve made my technique work more in my favour.

But yes. I have issues to address. As one pro fighter once told me -

"No loss is really a sign failure. Its just a learning curve. Thats what makes you better and better."
