  • sparring problem?

I'm having a sparring issue that's really frustrating me. There is this semi-beginner fella at my gym who always seem to grab my punches whenever I spar with him. For example, I throw a jab to his head, and he will grab and hold onto it. I know you are not supposed to necessarily grab punches when boxing or thai boxing (maybe i'm wrong, none of my instructors do it or instruct others to do it, and I have never seen it used in a fight). From what I do know is that if somebody punches at you-keep your chin down, hands up and tight, circle out, etc. My problem is I don't how to counter it other than to simply speed up my punches, so if anybody has any strategies tell me.

Is he pulling you into a clinch?

Have you ever tried to fake the jab and see what he does....fake the jab and if his hands move or drop then come at him with a hard move like a over hand cross or leg kick!

        1. Let him grab your jab - then come with a big overhand right.

        2. If he grabs you punch - give a push/side kick into his midsection.

        3. If he grabs... start to clinch him for a knee. See how good his grappling skills are and if there's any danger from a knee if he's grabbing your punches.

        4. Grab HIS punches and see what he does in return (maybe there is a method in his madess)

Dummy a jab and see if he tries to grab it. If he's concentrating too much on actually grabbing your punches then you can use it against him. Also take note if other areas of his body are exposed when he grabs.

Attack him with a knife, when he goes to grab it his hand will be eliminated

Stupid answer. Didn't you say "Get a gun" in response to another "how to" thread?

Not funny, not witty, not helpful.

It's not a stupid answer. If you follow my advice you will win. If you want to win without hurting anyone then it suddenly becomes alot more complicated. OK get a PRETEND knife and do what I said, then when he goes to grab it you say "If that was real, your hand would be stabbed. Why do you grab people's hands anyway?"

Bri Thai I'm sorry I said something that wasn't completely helpful, I should try to be more like you .

If they are grabbing your punches, they are probably reaching. Throw a left hook when he thinks you are going to be jabbing. That's how our instructor usually knocks us for "pawing" too much when we are doing hands.

Snap those jabs! Tom is right use knees- clinch and knee him. Also as he grabs you're jab throw an elbow with your oppsite arm, or just be nice and nail him with a right cross or hook. After a knee or two, or elbow or two he won't be grabing.

Use a chain saw and see if he grabs that, if that too dangerous get a plastic one.
