Again, I will reiterate to you that if I am going to clinch someone, ESPECIALLY if they are basically giving up control to me b/c they think they will be able to bite, then they are in for a world of hurt!

If you are in the dominant clinch position, you should not, repeat NOT pull your opponents head in towards your shoulder or neck. You should be pulling their head DOWN and getting your weight on top of them!

IMHO, there is not benefit to having your opponents head pulled to the side of your own, or into your own shoulder/neck area when you are in the Dominant Clinch Control Position. You are giving your opponent TOO MUCH opportunity to get out of the hold and reverse it on you.

If you have Control, pull your opponents head DOWN DOWN DOWN and lean your weight on top of him. Make him hold you up.

In my experience, the only time you see the clinch performed so that you are pulling your opponents head to the side of your own, or into your shoulder is when you do NOT have FULL CONTROL, and your opponent is resisting you and fightning for control of YOUR neck.

If your opponent is doing this, then he will not be in a good position to bite either.

How can someone bite you if you have your hands around their neck??

        Doesnt make sence.

Also its real hard to actually get a bite on the side of the neck.

I think it is posible to bite...... the knee as it aims for your chin.

Then using a strong bite and twist of the neck you could then throw the guy onto his head, killing him instantly.

It is a secret move of the koganinpo kempo karatae bu ju tai do nin chi ki prana jutsu kai

              Biting from the clinch. Hmm...

Ease of use: Doable. I bet if you set your mind to this you could set it up from the clinch. I haven't tried though.

Effectiveness: Could do damage (bleeding to disfigurement), especially if you actually got a major artery. Perhaps the biggest effect would be psychological. Biting is something that can psychologically take the wind out of somebody's sails in a hurry. Don Dreger talked about a tribe in Indonesia who did a lot of biting in his book, "Weapons and Fighting Arts of Indonesia". (I've got my martial arts books packed up right now, so I can't check--moving soon). I remember there was a passage about a guy taking a bite out of a 2x4 to show Don Dreger how they trained their jaws for biting. I also remember that Don Dreger observed that their teeth were pretty thrashed.

Of course, the argument against this is pretty simple: Epidemeologically unintended consequences. Drawing blood, especially into your own mouth, is a risky activity in terms of HIV, hepatitis and several other blood born illnesses. (Alright, it's VERY unlikely you'll get in a fight with someone with mad cow disease...)

okay, i tested the biting from the clinch. It works. Trick it to initiate the bite while the person is going for the clinch. you can also bite the arm and the cheek.

                  In a hurry more later.

Hey Chris, think about the times when you are in biting distance. Whenever grappling is involved, biting is an option. A head but would close the distance.

Oh yeh tom - i totally agree.

I think that the clinch is very very open to JuJutsu throws, balance taking etc.

I think that in the street - if the odds are stacked n you are locked up a bite will do wonders.

biting, eye gouging, attacking genitals, throat, knees are all very effective street moves.

I was only kidding with my post by the way .....

                        Apology

I have to apologize to ExcessiveForce because I did not take the "biting from the clinch" question very seriously. In my experience, I could not really think of any situation where biting would be appropriate.

However, I was working in the clinch with a few of my students last week, and because of this thread, I began to look for opportunities to bite. (I did not actually bite, but merely looked for times that I could bite were I so inclined to do so)

I will have to admit that there were more opportunities to bite than I had expected.

But, I will also say that I still question the effectiveness of this tactic.

As I saw, biting opportunities were occurring while my partners and I were fighting for control of the clinch, typically when we were momentarily stalled on equal footing. There were a few opportunities that presented themselves when in this position.

I have to point out, however, that we were Neck-Wrestling ONLY! No knees were being thrown, which will add an entirely new dimension/dynamic to the equation. I think that adding knee strikes to the equation will cause bites to be much less effective, because often during the "stalemates" when biting opportunities presented themselves, both fighters would normally be throwing knee strikes to soften each other up for control.

I can only see the bite working when there is a stall in the clinch.

I would use it as a last resort rather than a common weapon.

Im quite good in the clinch so i would hope to avoid it rather than anything.
