  • body mechanics of the swing

Could somebody explain me the bodymechanics of the swing ? Do you hit with a thumb down position ?
Also , if you deliver a hook with more than 90 degrees(angle between your upper and forearm) , is it still possible to hit with the knuckles ? Or does it becomes more of a slapping motion ?I am not intrested in the rules of certain sports , just the bodymechanics . Thanks for your input .

The swing is delivered like a hook.It is thrown from the side, with a half-turn and "swinging" of the body, keeping your arm loose. It is thrown from a distance to the head or body and can also be used for a forward fall when you're unbalanced and you can then use this unbalancing movement to put more weight into the punch and doing a forward roll.
This is how I learned it in savate but actually I don't use it a lot, because it is so easily telegraphed.

Swing? I'm unfamiliar with that term, but from what you have written, it sounds like what we refer to as a variation of a Hook Punch. Or were you referring to an Elbow Strike?

I'm thinking you may be referring to one of the following:

INVERTED HOOK: Thrown with a similar body motion as a "normal" Hook Punch. You lean in the direction the punch is going a bit more to get more weight behind it. The arm is extended, but NOT FULLY (you'll hyperextend your elbow if its FULLY extended). The thumb is pointed downwards towards the floor. Your striking surface is the back of the forearm/wrist/hand. This style of punch is advantageous because it carries a LOT of weight behind it. It is like hitting someone with a baseball bat. And, when you're wearing boxing gloves, there is little padding on the back of the wrist making the impact sharper than that of a normal Hook Punch.

ELBOW STRIKE: As stated, the body motion is most similar to the "normal" or "textbook" Hook Punch. The hand on the same side as the elbow strike is tucked into your breastbone. There are different acceptable hand positions, one of which is to tuck the back of the wrist against your breastbone with the thumb down. You can also hold your hand in the position of a punch. You can also tuck your hand with the fingers/thumb pointed up to your chin. A lot depends on which specific elbow strike you're performing, the angle of attack, and what your specific target is.

      Hope that helps!

Yep it's the inverted hook.I learned it as the swing (french terminology) but that's the mechanics. It's a powerful punch, but easy to see coming.Throw it at the end of a combo and it should be fine,or try to set up your opponent before and catch him with the swing.
Another thing,a good wrestler will use the swing to his advantage,as you lean into the punch, you can be easily uprooted.
