  • sanshou vs muay thai... hmmm...? that's a toughy. sure sanshou is great, but so is muay thai. aren't they pretty much the same? i mean theere are some differences but they are the almost the same. and isnt one of the reasons that sanshou fighters win against muay thai fighters the throws? doesnt throwing your opponent add a point to your scorecard? that would mean that if you were a muay thai guy, who was dominating a round, and the sanshou guy threw you, it would even out the round or give the round to you. kinda blows. but anyway.., cung le is awesome and so is sanshou. and as for techniques go. i dunno if a lot of people join muay thai right away. they probably have a base in another art and take techniques they like and use them in muay thai. i use the axe kick when i spar at muay thai. its more of a shocker than a powerful kick. it can really throw someone off if u time it right.

    • thats what i am saying, most kung fu fighters arent really trained to fight. most of the schools are commercialized and are only there as a hobby. to keep fit fit and to just learn it as a sport.

most of the people who go to karate classes arent going there to become a professional fighter.

guys training in muay thai usually spar hard every time they train.

kung fu guys usually spend a lot of time punching and kicking the air, and a lot of forms.

they rarely have full contact sparring. or any ring experience.

      --------------------

san shou and muay thai are different. the only thing simular is that they wear shorts.

san shou guys are a lot quicker and have more technique where as muay thai fighters are stiff and usually only have one or two kicks that they do.

i have a 2 vcd videos of thailand vs china.

some guy name lui hai long whooped a muay thai fighter like nothing. the muay thai guys was more of a dummy to lui hai long.

the muay thai first threw a thai round house that missed. then a round house to the head.

the san shou fighter ducked, and then sweep the thai fighter to the ground.

and there was a lot of take downs from the san shou fighter. also, the muay thai fighter was tossed out the ring twice. haha.

      ------------

the other vcd, it was in thailand. between two last fighters. the 1st round, they were just testing each other out.
the 2nd round, the thai fighter started to act hard.
but the san shou guy was just too skilled.

when the muay thai fighter started doing his thai round house the the san shou fighter leg, the san shou guy just moved out the way, and then kicked the muay thai to the head and knocked out, twice! knocked him out cold.

      ----------

the thing i see with muay thai is that they are strong, but kinda stiff. they usually do the same move everytime.

like a round house to the leg.

and san shou fighter usually move out the way or block it and catch it, then throw the fighter to the ground.

i dont really know how they catch it cuz, when i try to catch those low kick, i usually get hit hard.

the only thing that works for me against those low kicks is to move out, block it with my leg or just throw a straight push kick to the stomach or leg of the fighter before he tries to throw that low round house.

      • Just my thought

However, I *HIGHLY* doubt that San Shou fighters can win the fight against Thai fighters such as Namsaknoi (258 wins 12 losses) , Samko (or Shamko... 298 wins 22 losses), Fuakao or Chokdi.
Sorry but I think Lui Hailong can beat them all up. That's just my opinion.

          • after recently seeing how TaeKwonDo beat the ass off of Muay Thai, i have no doubt that SanShou (which i think is just about the best stand up) could obliterate MuayThai any day of the year, in Lumpinee stadium.

The throws of Sanshou combined with the well developed side kick and excellent striking make it by far the superior art.

just look in the photo below, you dont see that in wimpy old muayThai

you raise an excellent point Bri, but one that may well be beyond sweet little HuSanYans comprehension just at the moment. This calls for immediate action!, I shall do none other than consult with the Oracle that is Sherwinc

                    • Russian draka kickboxers could beat both. They have the striking and throws and takedowns. They also are good at all these while Sanshou fighters typically just have a good sidekick and throws.

Cung Le has a really good spinning back kick and can throw some hard leg kicks too. I don't know how he pulls of the leg scissors, but he's got a good souplex/souplet.

                        • CKD, could you point me in the direction of a good website about the Draka, I am not familiar with this and it sounds very good indeed.

TomYum, I think very highly of Cung and have several of his fights on video, he really has the best flying scissor kick I have ever seen and he seems to get it right most of the time.
I seriously love SanShou and would train in it right now 3 days a week if I could find a damn school (i'm currently away from the big city).

                            • I know you were joking. You mentioned Sherwinc in your post so if you do that you are either making a joke about him or retarded enouph to believe his b.s. There is very little info on draka. Fighters from Draka have competed in Sanshou and beat some of the best fighters in China. But the thing is the Chinese have very biased judging. The only way for them to win is by getting a knockout. Its ridiculous. There was fight were the Russian knocked his Chinese opponent around the whole match but the Chinese got a higher score. It was like awarding Royler the victory over Sakuraba if the fight went to the judges. Here is a page with Draka. http://www.dfbi.iwt.ru/eng/ may have to get a translator to find out more, a lot of the page is in Russian.

                              • Wow! I just caught the tail-end of this topic and i think everyone has great opinions on this topic. In my own opinion, I voted for neither. I think both have their advantages and disadvantages. I wish i could contribute more but i only have little experience in both styles.
