I try to do it any day that I don't get to have a partner hold pads and hit me..... some weeks that is every day.... I'm forced to go to the Y and whack away on the bag.

6-7 days a week but times in the activity vary. the reason for this is because if there is too much time training your muscles to throw hard, your punches will gain loads of power but will slow down just a bit. you may not even notice until you try to hit something fast and you have to do it a few times before you hit it. you have trained your muscles to deliver loads of force to meet the resistance level they are accustomed to with the heavy bag.
this happens to me every so often and then i change it up a little by backing off the heavy and working the speed part. try to stay balanced is all i'm saying.

You can and should work speed on a heavy bag. I don't think anyone just powers out on a heavy bag and thats it. I have a heavy bag, and a speed bag at home, but I usually only use the heavy bag. I can't seem to get it right on the speed bag with anything but hand strikes

The heavy bag shouldn't slow you down, the form is the exact same.... Just don't push your punches.... hit the bag and back quick and snappy.... Shouldn't make your speed slower, if anything faster.

I've got a Century 6ft Thai bag in my garage that I kick daily in addition to 3-4 days of training at the gym. It keeps my shins, instep and feet tough. From my experience (like when I was injured for a few weeks) a lay off from kicking and kneeing the heavy bag makes those parts of the body that engage the bag/and or sparring partner sensitive. When I started training and sparring again after healing up my ribs I got sore toes, instep and shins from not having them as conditioned.
