  • ultimate fighting is it a sport?

guyz just wanted to ask, what do u think of ultimate fighting alot of people say that it's a sport that promotes martial arts,in my opinion it's not ,but when u look at it everything is acceptable like a street fight ,so what do u think.

  • #2
Whoa.........everything is NOT acceptable UFC and it is not like a street fight. This item is tossed around alot and the simple truth is this .......... UFC (and the like events) have time limits or no time limits, rules, artificial environment (a ring, padded floor) etc. You know the opponents and can study them, their techniques etc...please let me know when you will have that opportunity to know your attaker(s) fighting style, history of fights attitude etc in a "real" street fight...you won't. It is a sport brutal, yes. Athletic, yes. Close to real, I don’t know why people are so interested in making the comparison.

Are events like the UFC, PRIDE, K1 the closest thing to real fighting, yes. In the sense that generally you are allowed full range fighting (generally speaking) - PRIDE and K1 actually have more limitations (please someone else comments on this I am less familiar with these events).

As far as the UFC promoting Martial Arts….not any more. In the beginning, though it was really about promoting/marketing the Gracie name (don’t get me wrong it was smart business I’m just being realistic), it was more pure in terms of MAs and was truly a battle of styles, though some may argue the quality of the stylists. The current UFC has weight classes; there is not promotion of MA when everyone studies either BJJ or some form of submission wrestling or MT. And contrary to what alot of people may think, because ground fighting works in the octagon.....does not mean it is street effective I am so sick of hearing that argument, does it have application…. yes of course, but most people on the forum, even BJJ stylists know how rediculess it would be to volutarily/offensivly go to the ground. I do not study BJJ but will always consider grappling as my foundation.

Remember the modern version of the UFC has different management as was revised because of pressure from the state of the amount of brutality….The 1st version of the UFC had few rules….but still rules.

So my thoughts are that I like MMA support the events and they are sporting events. I do not think any of the participants (at least that I have heard) represent it any differently, that doesn’t mean that if you see one of these cats on the street they won’t be able to drop you.

Anyway, just my thoughts (anyone else)

ps this thread should probably be under MMA/BJJ

    pss good question

        Yep! It is a sport.

Boxing can be used in a streetfight but a boxing match is a sport with rules and regulations. The UFC can be seen as a similar thing with different rules.

Wow man, what did you eat for breakfast! His post was great. I would have posted the exact same thing.

Yes ultimate fighting is a sport. We now have most fighters with the same MA background. But most poeple don't see that it's a sport with rules. I'm getting tired of hearing poeple say MT and BJJ are the ultimate MA and that they're the best for street effectiveness. I would love to see a MT fighter take on knife armed attacker. I'd love to see a BJJ guy fight multiple attackers. Ok, i'll stop, i'm starting to drift off topic...

Exactly my point. They train in a sport, one vs one, unarmed.

You know what, wael k... Your ability to process information is less than inspiring. Not to mention your lack of grammar skills... If you ask me, IPON provided a very informative opinion.

The UFC and other NHB events DO NOT represent fighting... Sure, they include certain facets of fighting: skill, experience, conditioning etc... But REAL fighting is most commonly uncertain, with the element of surprise. Most real attackers also use a weapon, or have friends. And last, but not least, in a real fight, you don't have all day to figure out what to do... You have seconds before getting stabbed, gang-tankled, raped or shot... Take your pick.

Of course it's a sport! It's definately not like the early days anymore when it was almost purely a spectacle.

                      Wael K,
Control your propensity for whining and ad hominem attacks, or you will be forced to leave. Thank you.

And, yes, 'ultimate fighitng' is a sport. It does not accurately represent real world violence, but there are aspects of training for a sporting NHB environment that are useful in self-protection.

A tournament is type a sporting event, in which you have brackets and multiple matches to find the champion overall or by weight class. Though they state Tournament and it used to be...now it is really a group of single elimination matches by weight class.

                          WHAT is MIXED MARTIAL ARTS?
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is an intense and evolving combat sport in which competitors use interdisciplinary forms of fighting that include Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Karate, Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling and others to their strategic and tactical advantage in a supervised match. Scoring for MMA events in Nevada, New Jersey, Louisiana, Massachusetts, and Florida is based on athletic-commission approved definitions and rules for striking (blows with the hands, feet, knees or elbows) and grappling (submission, choke holds, throws or takedowns). No single discipline reigns.

WHAT is ULTIMATE FIGHTING™ in the UFC?
Ultimate Fighting™ is a proprietary term of the UFC. It is defined as a Mixed Martial Arts competition between highly skilled professional fighters who utilize the disciplines of Jiu-Jitsu, Karate, Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling, and other forms in UFC live events. UFC competitors or “Ultimate Fighters™” are among the best-trained and conditioned athletes in the world. While this is a highly intense sport, fighter safety is of paramount concern to UFC ownership and management. It is noteworthy that no competitor has ever been seriously injured in a UFC event.

                              Unfortunately, however, he misquoted me!
