What martial art are you studying now, as sometimes it can be good thing to be in the corner. It cuts down on your opponents options of what to hit you with with regards to his legs because of the ropes in the way, meaning you can get him into close range fighting. And if someone is smothering you with hooks to the ribs then take a step forward and elbow the bugger in the face! He won't be too keen on getting too close to you again.

There are a number of people here with ring exp. and good advice Anfo, but give us some more information...

You list a lot of different arts in your post; Are you training at a school or just with friends?

Are you using a set of rules in the ring, or just sort of having at it? Specifically , are you allowing Muay Thai elbows/knees/and clinch? What about grappling and throws?

The best advice in any case is this: You've already recognized that the ring is a new situation - You need to spend time in there and get used to it. Time will get you used to the pressure of full contact and being comfortable with that pressure is the only thing that will help you. In other words, Take the good advice you might get from this thread and try to use it, but you'll have to just keep getting in there and getting hit for a while

As the video game says...Welcome to the next level.

Work on your lateral footwork to keep out of the corners in the first place. Don't try to fight your way out of the corner (save that for later). If you find yourself in the corner, try to tie your opponent up, then pivot out. Say you're right-handed: your opponent has you in the corner and he throws a left to your body. Trap his left arm underneath your right, then pivot out of the corner to your right. If he's "head hunting" you would duck and pivot out. The important point is not to try to fight your way forward.

do not get caught in the corner or you are going down, dont back down, just simply fight fight fight with all your heart.

quoted from Coban Lookchaomaesaitong professional Muay Thai champion (retired now) with over 270 pro fights under his belt.

"...I see this with my students too. I always tell them, "don't worry, relax and just fight." Take this fighting spirit into your real life too so when you are in the ring, it's nothing special, no big deal. And the more you fight, the better and less scared you get. Don't worry. When you are in the ring, you're all by yourself. No one can help you. So, all you can do is fight. So fight! Don't back down. Like in life, no one is going to live your life. So, no one is going to fight your fight for you. Muaythai is not winning or being better than the other guy. It is learning to lose before winning and to give from your heart before receiving. In muaythai, you always win and lose. So, don't worry. (Smile)..."

Keep your guard up no matter how tired you are. Lowering your guard will show your opponent your tired and the combo's will come flying in. So will the 10 count

Don't let your opponent push you back into a corner, I used to do that. If he is advancing fast you should dig your feet in hard, get up close and push against him. This will stop him in his tracks and also prevent him from throwing straight punches and and big kicks. If your fighting Muay thai though, at this point you'll probably end up in the clinch so sort your clinch work out.

Bite down on your mouthguard and breath through your nose. Getting lamped on the chin while it's floating in thin air wont do you much good I can tell you.

If fighting Muay Thai without protection try to destroy his legs, especially the shins. If he throws and waistline kick make sure you elbow the crap out of his leg.

              Hey!

              S. Anucha, I thought your philosophy was more about running. Or has that changed suddenly.

Before deciding to step in ring be sure to be in the best shape possible .Do lots of push ups,sit ups, jogging, skipping etc.

Practice your kicks and punches on kicking shields, heavy bag,and focus mitts.Practice your shin blocks and get used to keeping your hands up to block, learn to bob,and weave.Practice,Practice,Practice.

Try to never get put in corner worst place to be, however should that happen don't worry too much it is still possible to get out. That is where clinching and knees are really useful.Once you have gotten out of corner go in fast and hard on him with several combinations like jabs, right cross, knees or jab, right cross, double up on shin kicks etc just some examples and do your best to put him in corner and keep him there. If you can go for upper cut and KO.

If fighting MuayThai take advantage of being able to use your knees when needed.

When you go in ring for first time just be confident after a couple hits and kicks from opponent you will get the hang of it.Just make sure those few kicks and punches from guy you are fighting aren't going to take you out and not give you a chance to fight back so always be prepared to block.

If what you are doing is working best for you keep it going if it doesn' t try something else. You'll do fine we all have lost some fights against other MuayThai fighters before winning.

If you're fighting someone in karate, kung fu or tae kwon and you do MuayThai you definitely have nothing to worry about.

Don't give the poor lad advice like that. MT wont make him or anyone else invincible. MT is effective yes, especially against other styles such as forms of Karate and Kung Fu but to totally disregard another fighter just coz he doesn't do MT is dangerous IMO

If you're gym is allowing Muay Thai style clinch then I have this advice too...

If someone is coming straight at you with punches (body hooks or whatever); raise you shoulders, tuck your chin, and charge in - grab the neck and straight knee (maybe curve knee if you are going less than full contact). You might get hit once on the way in, but if your cover is good it won't hurt you as much as one or two straight knees will hurt him. The trick here is committment - you have to just lower your chin and charge in.

If you haven't heard of this before, practice with a fellow student sometime. One of you comes in punching, the other tries to hook the neck with one hand, and straight knee immedietly, then grab with the other hand and knee some more.

There are other ways of handling a puncher of course, but you specifically mentioned body hooks and getting chased backwards. This tactic addresses both of those situations at the same time.

Man i noe MT is more effective then some other arts such as TKD n karate , but kung fu mixed wit muay thai n kickboxing is pritty effective. because on the street MT wont always be as effective as kung fu/tai chi.

You're backed in the corner and the guy in front of you throws hooks to your body. What do you do?

NEVER drop your hands. If one drops, he'll go upstairs with the hook. Roll with the body hooks a little and get the thai clinch. If he is crouched and hitting your body, the clinch presents itself to you. When you get it, throw one or two quick knees to put him on defense. Use push off from your legs to move the both of you out a step or two- like pushing a heavy wheelbarrow, not shoving.

Once you move him out (still in the clinch), pull his head and spin him around into the corner. Now its your turn.
