  • Who is interested in starting a Muay Thai magazine of our own!

I recieved a message from Jamie fighter in response to a thread about Muay Thai magazine originally posted by dbok1. I would like anyone who is interested to give me some ideas and maybe some resources to help get this started. It seems like a most interesting endeavor.

        a perspective

About 2 years ago I was approached by a member of the Thai Boxing Association who was disillusioned by paying $30 a year dues and getting one newsletter every 3 or 4 years. He was willing to put up the money to publish a quarterly newsletter-style newspaper, to sell to the public as well as TBA members. So, knowing we here in the Northwest could do this, even if we had to fill it with stories from the Pacific Northwest Muay Thai Camp, and training drills from Master Chai, I emailed the editor/publisher of the TBA Newsletter offering to take the responsibility out of his hands. I have heard nothing from him since, although he seems willing to put my years-old stories in publication to fill space, heavily-edited, of course, to make them seem disrespectful to Ajarn Dan Inosanto (whom I have never called khun khru in my life, having been in the car when he was told by Master Chai: "From now on I want your students to call you Ajarn.") I really feel there is a void waiting to be filled here in North America. And I believe as long as the Thai boxing fraternity is but a small part of the commercial martial arts industry, we will never have a magazine to fill it. And, as usual, I have no answers

          Chalambok,

Hello. Ya know, I would like to see more frequent newsletters from the TBA as well, but the responsibility does not rely soley on our editor/publisher. And I really doubt he intentionally edited your writings to make it look like you were disrespectful to Guro Dan. He was not in the car with you and Dan's students calling him Ajarn is not a publicly known thing from Ajarn Chai. I have been to the Oregon camp and I never once heard anyone refer to Guro Dan as Ajarn. The editor probably "edited" thinking he was doing the respectful thing...or, like all humans...made a mistake.

But, I do agree there needs to be a magazine or newletter published to fill this void we all feel. I don't have any insight to offer right now, but just wanted to say I do agree. If you can get it started, I think it would fly!

            TBA Newsletter

            Hello to all,

Dave Rogers, “the editor in question” of the TBA newsletter here.
Just a small note, I’m getting ready to go to work right now, but if your interested in publishing a new magazine, I would say go for it Steve.
I never had any desire to be a “journalist, editor, publisher, and TBA Association official, or any other person of authority, to begin with, nor did I even have a computer, let alone was I computer literate. Frankly, I got drafted. Plain and simple, and when I was asked to help, I did so.
I beg and pleaded with other Instructors for their help and lets just say I got a “limited response”. To those that did, I did my best to help them out. Dean Lessei always came through for me with training, inspiration, you name it, and he did it.
No disrespect and I’m not complaining. But I was handed lemons and made lemonade, lemon milkshakes, lemon soup, lemon pie, lemon turkey, lemon mashed potatoes and a mean lemon-soufflé.
I even spent my own money on a Website until my server changed hands for the 4th time. And that when I decided to give that a rest.
Sorry about editing your stories too harshly Steve. I did my best.
As far as getting your newsletters, most of you have yourself to blame. I was given a updated list of TBA members that I had to “fish” for the truth into who was still “updated” or “moved” or Unknown addressee, or even “Dead” or god knows what. I had numerous returns and believe me it didn’t help the finances to send out material and then watch my mailbox fill up with returned newsletters.
To this day, I have not taken one penny, for the work that I did to help Ajarn Chai promote his organization.
In that time a lot of water has gone under the bridge, and I have met a lot of people. Most of the people have told me I did a decent job as editor.
Thanks to everyone who has supported me.
Steve if you so desire, I would gladly support you as the new editor.
A little advise, get a bigger mailbox.
            Talk to you all later,

            Dave
