"Verbal" fence...or shield
Some guys in the RBSD calls this a "fence". Kinda like the arms up and hips down response to sudden stimuli. Your voice should reflect your state of mind and intent. You can't really THREATEN someone if you're afraid they are about to attack you. But what I was taught as a COMMAND voice! This will be more realistic under adrenal stress as well. "I'm warning you, i'm a blackbelt in the secret fighting arts of the far East... HAHAHA!!! No...
You must speak LOUDLY and CLEARLY to STOP!! BACK OFF!! (ever watch COPS do a felony stop? ) No more of this victim mindset crap, TAKE CHARGE! There is no gaurantee that anything will work but if the body in the cooler is his (or hers) and not yours.... you get the idea. Pay close attention to his hands because you DO want to see them. Out in plain sight, away from possible weapons he may have in his waistband or pockets... Tell him so! FORCEFULLY!
Knowing when it's time to hurt/maim, cripple or kill someone is at least as important as knowing HOW...After you attempt a verbal fence (and draw attention of witnesses) if the attack continues you bring up a physical "fence", your arms up, hands open in a defensive posture but not threatening with clenched fist or weapon... yet. IF YOU HAVE ALL THIS TIME to prepare it sets you up as the clear victim in the eyes of the court.
If not it's time to stomp this POS into Goo! "go time"
Your legs are a shield too (Stop kick) Jamming his knee to stop his forward movement before he can reach you with his hands... or (pick your range and weapons) knees and palms, big Judo throw or trip, stomp his foot! Anything to make him think again about what he's doing, As husnira says, "remind him of god"
Big paper weight across his chin? you know, whatever you've got? Slip that shoe off and bust a nut...
OR withdraw to safety... throw obstacles between him and yourself as you back away. Turning your back might be a BAD idea. Pick up anything that can be used to SHIELD yourself from his attack. If he has a knife this becomes even MORE important. ( but then you would be justified if you just shoot him dead) He wants something and may resort to violence if you fail to provide it... Can't really kill him. Defense is easy. Distance is a good shield. If he closes that distance he's going to hurt you. No shield = good victim.
