Just do what Bruce Lee did and ask them to take turns
Seriously though, I would quickly try to pick the weakest one and get through him to escape. Shouting "STOP" can be surprisingly effective in getting a moments hesitation.
The only time I have been in a multiple oponent situation is with the police when I was a lot youger (maybe 15 years ago) and a lot dumber. Luckily I only resisted being held and taken down, and didn't react more violently. Silly situation to get into, but a good lesson.
I read an article on Gung Fu, it was a martial art for attack multiple opponents.... Everyone here is just re enforcing what it said...
NEVER stop moving.
Weave in and out of everyone to get the confused.
Dont focus on one person
be aware of everyone and try and strike someone youre not looking at.
"I always carry my brass knucks after getting jumped so many times"
"Straight up holme slice, I carry some other illegal shiz but I gotz to get the brass up in this bizatch"
"I can kick both your asses with or without your shit"
Me: "PWNED" (Thats my E-Nerd coming out)
Moses " Let there be light"
God: "Dont steal my line moses"
Jesus "what?"
Moses "if you say so... jackass..."
God: "What was that?"
Moses: "Uhh uhh nothing..."
God: "Suck burning bush" *Throws burning bush at moses but it hits jesus instead*
Jesus: "aaah you missed!"
God: "I never miss"
Jesus " WTE (Expletive cause jesus doesnt swear)"
God: "CLEAN YOUR GOD DAMN ROOM"
Jesus: "Clean heaven?"
God: "Yes clean heaven you jackass"
Jesus: "But heaven's always clean its heaven"
God: "Not for the people who like it dirty"
Jesus: "But wouldnt you be destroying their heaven"
God: "Shutup I can do what I want, *Crushes jupiter*"
Lol... ok... Ummm, I'm not an E-thug, and I know GQ Chris isn't either... as for the rest of that post... lol I think you went on a little ramble there lol.
The human shield is the tactic of choice in my experience. First, identify the leader; He's:
a)the guy who approaches first
b)the guy doing the mouthing off
c)the guy who each of the guys take their queues from
Once you have got a good idea who the leader is, hit him hard and restrain him, putting him in front of you as if you were going for a rear naked choke. Once there, you have to put the pain on him. If you are armed, make sure he knows it by putting your blade or barrel in his back or to his neck. The most important thing to do is make him scream. Everytime one of the other guys takes a step toward you, you've got to make him scream bloody murder. A silent hostage has as much effect on the other guys' psych as a riot shield, which amounts to nothing. So its important to be able to make the guy yell in pain and fear at will. Sometimes in desperate situations, you have to let a little blood flow. It can be from breaking his nose with the initial attack, or it could be from cutting his neck a little bit to add to the fact that you mean business.
I've seen this done with and without weapons. Without a weapon, I would only suggest using the windpipe as a visual threat. If you use things like the eyes, wristlocks or the testicles, the other guys may not perceive it as lethal and make a go at it. But the windpipe when properly manipulated will inspire fear in the human shield's eyes that his friends will read immediately. It won't just be the look of pain. It will be the look of fear for his life. And if you know what your doing, you can force your hostage to make disturbing gurgling sounds. That's accomplished by using just enough pressure to let some air escape after having held the airway completely shut for about 8-10 seconds.
Make sure you use your dominant hand to do the choking, because once your adrenaline starts pumping all you'll have is gross motor skill and your dominant hand will retain more control that you weak hand. Use the weak hand to dig the hostage's eyes to take away his vision. This will further panic him, and using the eye dig won't be the threat, but it will be what you'll use to make him scream when they begin to approach, and they will approach. Remember this is for when you are unarmed without a blade.
The reason its important to use the leader of a group in this scenario is because you want someone that the group cares for and/or respects. If you pick the guy that everyone hangs out with because he pays for the drinks, or he's the ride, you might be S.O.L. You can't always get a guy that everyone cares about, but most of the time, unless you fighting with psychopaths, they will hesitate once you make your human shield scream like his life is on the line.
I've also learned that once you have your hostage, put your best poker face on. If you start screaming and acting like a maniac, you'll raise the groups adrenaline level and eventually rage will come about. You're not looking to fan the flames, you're looking to confuse. If you have a human shield, but you seem calm and cool, their brains won't be able to process it in the heat of the moment. Even as you make the guy scream, you shouldn't look crazy, as they might come to the conclusion that your hostage may die if they don't act. You have to seem neither angry or crazy. You have to seem focused and determined and very, very serious. Whisper in your hostages ear "Tell them to back up now". Dig in his eyes a little bit to make him say it with conviction. Once you're given room, your mind should be focused on exit strategies.
Keep in mind, people who fight or rob together usually know each other. This works in your favor because they don't want to see their friend or family get killed. I'm telling you there's nothing like a little blood to make people pay attention. I personally prefer to use a blade to the clavicular notch because of AIDS, but desperate times ... yada yada yada.
You have to improvise. Here in NY, many of the places you go to have metal detectors and pat downs. You can't always be armed like you'd like to be. So IMO, if you can't bring the sword, make the shield.

BRAVO...VERY NICE POST UKE!!! that should be made a sticky
AS i do kung fu nd karate I'd suggest none of that wrestling stuff as the others are just going to swarm aorund you and give you a kicking (unless you've got a gun or blade to the guy's throat).
Persoanlly, I'd pic the weakest link and kick the crap out of him so he's out of position and you've got space to run away through.

If you must fight multiples and for whatever reason you cannot use the shield method, I'd suggest using aikido footwork to weave in and around your opoonents. No other art that I am aware of teaches footwork that is as fluid and evasive as aikido. The circle pattern in which the steps are based off of is perfect when you are surrounded, as you are in a circle of attackers. The footwork promotes non-stop movement and allows you to maintain control of where you end up.
Aside from footwork, the strikes used should be fast and short. No lunging front or side kicks or jump kicks. No grappling unless you are going to use an attacker as a shield. No long elaborate punching combinations on just one guy as that keeps you stationary long enough for one of the guys surrounding you to grapple with you. And once you're on the ground, they going to stomp you into a fine powder. So keep you strikes fast and aimed at vital points like the eyes, jaw, throat, testicles, and kneecaps. I personally love steel toed boots, so a nice hard and quick kick to a kneecap can yield nice results.
One of the biggest mistakes to make is to get caught up. Remember that the objective here is to get out of there safely, not inflict as much pain as you can. One example is when one of the attackers figures that he has to take one for the team and he just charges. You see him coming out of the corner of your eye and you turn to greet him with a nice forearm chop to the throat or jaw. Now he's dazed and stunned, but you get caught up in beating him down. You're landing hooks, elbows, knees ... but you forgot for only 4 seconds that his friends are going to jump in. Now, they're all over you. You're trying to grab someone ... ANYONE, but there are too many of them. They're hitting you all over, and that guy you were pummling has you in a clinch so that you can't be mobile anymore. The lesson here is not to engage any one attacker so as to make yourself vunerable to distraction. You fight the group as a whole so that you never for a second stop moving. In your mind it should be as if four walls are closing in and you must defeat each one. But if you must slow down, and it will probably be from fatigue, make every shot count. I don't expect everyone, or anyone here for that matter, to be in shape to keep up a five minute fight. So once you are fatigued, you'd better stun of of them with your best shot and go for the shield.
And again, I can't stress just how far a little blood goes to making people pay attention.
first in this situation lethal force is authorized...WEAPONS FREE....first..destroy the immediate inbound threat..arm foot whatever..i possible use a trow or sweep..this will give you a gap between them..if you can you have to pic a direction and attack...this will either allow an escape..great or at least room to attack the others the same way..kind of like maylee fighting with sword and buckler...footwork is important...though i do disagree that akido is the only art that teaches this any are that used swordplay though i would say that modern fencing in not that realistic as it wasforduels not malee fights

So what other art has footwork that is as fluid as aikido? Paqua circle stepping? Arnis or Kali triangle stepping? Boxing lateral movement? I've used these methods before, and aikido's footwork is still the most fluid and evasive. Its also the most deceptive. Boxing is good as well, but it does not teach how to turn to meet attackers in different directions. Boxing footwork is meant for the foe right in front of you.
Now I'm not saying that someone couldn't go out and successfully use boxing footwork to defend themselves. The point at hand is concerning which system's footwork is put together so that it prepares you for the reality of multiple opponents. Out of all the styles mentioned, Aikido is the ONLY one that has been seen to address multiple attackers since its conception. You can see Ueshiba sensei in vintage footage fighting multiple attackers. Now while some may question the method that he used to dispatch them(atemi, wrist throws, unbalancing), I've never met anyone who questioned whether his footwork put him in a position to do so. Now I can see that you never said that aikido footwork didn't accomplish this. But you did disagree, and stated that all swordplay arts accomplish this. I disagree with that as Japanese swordsmanship has always been set apart by its conservation of motion, and its ability to fluidly move around a foe as it attacks.
Throws are great, but unless you are a trained (and I mean dedicated) jujitsu or judo man, 9 times out of 10 you won't be throwing an aggresive opponent without struggling to do so. People think that executing a hip or shoulder throw is so easy until they fight a guy who has no intention of being thrown. And time trying to sweep your man and getting tangled up means that you just gave an opportunity to his friends to pound you. Remember, this topic is about multiple opponents. If you can pull off a sweep or a throw fast enough to be back in position before your attackers are upon you, then you're good. Why do you very seldom see judo throws in MMA? Because unless that is something that you've trained to do, it ain't easy. You'll see more wrestling throws than judo throws. You'll see more sacrifice takedowns than sweeps. Why? Because Judo sweeps and throws take a measure of mastery to execute. Wrestling throws take less technique and more strength and conditioning. The sacrifice takedowns you see in BJJ are just upsetting the balance in your foe's legs to bring him down with your weight. Do that in a multiple opponent situation and you're looking to get real dead real quick. I understand the concept of throwing to make a gap, but if you don't have extensive experience with your throws, I'd advise going another route.
I totally agree with you about punishing the offending limb. That's a rule. Closest weapon to the closest target will save your life when seconds count. Nice concept to bring up here, fleetgunz.
back at you i study middevil european swordsman sword and buckler and greatsword you should check it out too. as for throws you have a point i presumed that anyone who would try it is practices and anyone who is into h2h/sd should be thoughly practiced in their use... Take a look at the techniques used in the WW2 training for the SOE and the OSS or most of the real combat throws properly exicuted ...one bad guy down...
