Isn't the key to knocking someone out with one punch to hit them on the "button," that part at the bottom of the chin where the shock will go straight through their head and knock them clean out? I've seen two fights on television where a boxer knocked out his opponent with his first punch in the first round of the entire fight. Both times, it was with a quick jab that the other guy didn't see coming that went right into the button and knocked him out clean.

Also, regarding attacking the ears, what about ripping or tearing at them? Someone could be really mean, slap you upside the head, grab the ear, and YANK! I am sure there might be legal ramifications for that, but if the guy has a knife or gun and you're protecting your wife, a lot of folk might do just that to help shut the guy down.

The "button" is the best place. It doesn't take all that much power if you are accurate enough. But that button is not so easy to hit, so go for anywhere on the lower half of the head (long the jaw-line / back of head).

I am currently studying a system called C2 Core Combatives. The target in this system is the "mastoid process" of the jaw. The reasoning is as follows:

If you aim for the "button" and miss, you may well miss the head altogther. If you aim for the mastoid and miss, you will still have an excellent chance of hitting the head or neck at least somewhere. We also go for massive impact and repeated blows to maximise our chances of success.

Ripping ears? Maybe but, even then, if the guy you are fighting is rock hard it will just piss him off.
