I read the article...5 years for carrying a knife huh?
FUCKING RETARDED. So, those going out to BREAK THE LAW anyway with a knife by committing assault or murder aren't going to carry knives? Dur...

while those carrying knives for defense...get fucked over dually, by the knife wielding assailants with an advantage, and by the local authorities.

How much of this shit would happen if EVERYBODY was carrying?
That's my fucking point, have everyone strapped with knives.

Sure is fortunate they have cameras everywhere for security....I hope all the American assholes pushing for them take note how well they deter crime.

I'm sure the dead guy is real impressed they caught them, perhaps the MINDSET and ability to defend is better than teaching NOT to defend. In fact the quote from the British police was "dont get revenge, run" ... "because our cameras are watching" yeah, they were watching him DIE!!

I carry this knife for self-defense, and that's exactly what I used it for when I realized that talking and empty hand measures weren't going to stop him." And if that's not the truth when you tell the story, chances are you were wrong anyway and you deserve to go to jail.
I hope you're right...but everytime I've heard anything about this...even from cops...they say to NEVER say that a knife is for self defense. Apparently some judicial asshole declared that self defense implies intent to do another person harm. Of course...a criminal might claim use of a weapon as self defense even if it wasn't the case...so...I think it's a precarious situation to be in regardless of the particular state laws...have an alibi for carrying a knife if need be...and, this is only what I'd suggest...if you think you can get away with it, no finger or foot prints, blood, etc...beat feet and let somebody else clean up the mess. It's getting harder and harder these days to legally defend yourself...you could knife a rapist trying to injure a family member and probably STILL probably get a few years. I have no fucking faith in the system.

                        Mike,

Unfortunately, I have known folks who went to prison when they did all the right things and folks who didn't go to prison when I couldn't see how in the hell what they did was self-defense. I guess in the end it's better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.

This is a little off topic but this would be a good template to build a force options continuum off of.

I find a lot of folks are a little fuzzy about what self-defense is or what it isn't. Maybe that would make a good thread on it's own (if it hasn't been done already), what do you think?

I'm not saying that you'll be given a pat on the back and an "atta boy" from the cop after he shows up and finds you standing over a corpse soaked in blood. What I'm saying is that if you're a law abiding citizen without a record of violent offenses and a legally recognized permit to carry your weapon of choice, you'll probably be okay. I've only gotten in one fight with someone while I was carrying a gun. I didn't draw or use it because I didn't feel there was a need. I was right, but the guy called the police right after I did, and I stuck around to give a statement. I told the cop I had a gun and my CCW permit, as well as a folding knife (an Emerson Commander) in my pocket. He asked me to take them out (he didn't do it himself, and he didn't cuff me) and lay them down on his car while we talked. I gave him my side of it, told him matter of factly what had hapened. He ran my info and checked my story with the other witnesses, and when I came back clean with no record, I got my stuff back and he thanked me for my time.

Now, if I'd shot the guy, I would have been waiting with my firearm unloaded and locked open on the ground several yards away, my CCW and liscense in my hand, and my hands above my head when the cops arrived, and I'd have expected to get cuffed and booked. I also would have expected to be turned loose on bond until thetrial, and I would expect to be aquitted of all charges afterward, because I know that I would not resort to that level of force unless it was all I had available to me. From practical and real world experience, I can tell you that for a fact.

Yeah...and when they background check YOU as compared to an average joe...there's going to be a huge difference. I mean, your a contributing member and pillar of the military and law enforcement communities...whereas a 20 year old college student like myself might as well be a drug dealer.

and what if you...er...don't exactly have a clean slate? (I do, but I'm often with people who don't...and...um...occassionally some with bench warrants.)

As my lieutenant use to say…"Sometimes you have to weigh your tactical options to your legal options and live or die with the consequences. No one can make that decision for you."
