I'm sorry if I seem argumentative here. But as I've stated above I've been in enough, and seen even more situations under different circumstances to say that I'm at least somewhat qualified to speak on what CAN HAPPEN in a real fight. I think BJJ, wrestling, and Judo are all good in a real fight, so long as you do not go to your back

No offense taken, and I haven't been in many fights at all, so for me it's just theory. So, in theory, I'd say that being on your back on the street would suck.

I'm banking on the BJJ'er being able to stay out of that situation or at least get out of it in a hurry. Now if you get under some behemoth and he stacks you, then your BJJ butt is likely to suffer on the asphalt...

Not taken as argumentative at all.

I had a good post typed out and then a pasted when I meant to copy and lost it all. Here is the summary:

Being on your back on the street would stink. My thought is that the BJJ'er might be able to avoid that position or reverse it quickly.

I maintain that grappling is not ideal for 'the street' but that it is also not the utter suicide that some make it out to be.

And you are correct... in fact, as I stated, I think takedowns/throws have the greater potential for ending a fight. Another thing people don't take into account, is that terrain effects striking too. My boy was going back and forth yelling at this dude and the other dude steped off the curb to hit em, and into like a ... I wanna say pothole type thing, well anyway, it was a low spot in the street, and he threw the punch, even landed it hard(my boy sidestepped, but not far enough, and he didn't put his hands up quick enough) and as soon as his foot hit the pothole, he twisted his ankle, and was on the ground. lol. I was laughing hysterically, and even though it's an extreme example, I think it shows SOMEWHAT that striking can have some hinderances in real life application.

Tonto is just on an anti-BJJ agenda. Must be insecure right.

                Morons say what?

Anti idiot. You want a taste of REALITY?

Go smash yourself on the sidewalk!

How many of you even know what color blood is?

Reality will kill MOST martial artists! Go PLAY your empty hand games...

For the record I've been in more "real" fights than I can remember. I've lost and I've won. I've trained with some REAL BJJ players. I'm sure you don't know a 5th dan named Fabio S. or my buddy Hal F. so as I said and will say again (and again) GO SMASH YOURSELF ON THE SIDEWALK!!

Someday you might have a clue. Or not! The title of this thread is SERIOUS something or other, right? LMAO! What a Joke!

Back and forth? Why would you assume my post was directed @ you? Feeling insecure? LOL SERIOUSLY, the ART doesn't make the fighter does it? Isn't it the MAN that makes the art work? Think people. Reality calls for weapons (IMO) Just ask any LEO...

Lol well... that's not really relavent to the discussion, but that's ok! lol. We basically came to the conclusion(I've been there since i got into my first fight, way before I knew what BJJ was) that being on your back in a fight is bad, even in MMA, it's even worse(I'd say 100 fold) if you're in a real fight on a hard surface. BJJ is however good, due to knowledge and practice of leverage and balance, hopefully you will be able to put the OTHER guy on his back. Also, takedowns, as everyone knows can devestate and even kill on hard surfaces.

I think weapons are good, but I mean it's not like EVERYONE pulls weapons in reality... martial artists seem to have concluded that, I mean, I would use a weapon under certain circumstances, and have. But under others, I would not. Depends where you are, what the situation is... ect. My fav weapon is still brass knuckles, I've seen enough knives end up in the other dudes hand and it's never been pretty.

What do you know about silat? You think a silat man needs some BJJ in his game to be a complete fighter? And Judo and wrestling are part of BJJ, eh?

Well, I see I'm not needed here. You players have fun...
He's only thinking about taking BJJ too.
I voted BJJ for the hell of it, I think they both work but I voted bjj only because I practice it and I'm very biased!
+ Their are many styles of Kung fu aren't there? Hell I know nothing about any of them but surely there will be styles that are better than others?

Since a Silat fighter would be armed it is not neccesary for him to expert in BJJ. But wouldnt it be beneficial for a BJJ'r to expert in Silat?
Grappling is made up of wrestling,Judo,BJJ, and some of styles, and BJJ is pretty much the most complete style of grappling. Usually people who do BJJ already have background in wrestling or Judo, especially wrestling.
Judo is as complete as BJJ. Stop making dumb assumptions.
