I need help finding a good grappling art, but don't know what to chose from. So can I hear any opinion on any and can anyone tell me where i can find one in NYC.

You don't need a grappling art. You need a weapon art.

NY (City) has some of the most F'd up knife laws in the country!

"Stick" fighting styles like Kali or Eskrima would be good, Something with Silat or modern Arnis also. Don't overlook decent RBSD or combatives...

Survival is not about what grappling style will work better in the streets. That will depend entirely on YOU. Stay safe, stay on your feet!

So you are suggesting that he breaks NYC's weapons carry laws right. Nice move Mr Clever.

I would definately check Miyama Ryu jujutsu since you are in the Bronx.
Miyamaryu Ju Jutsu, Judo and Karate Hombu Dojo. Bronx New York and Worldwide.

Also, here is a link to other MAs in NYC

Oishi Sensei is a long trip for you unless you are in the city for work or school. but if you don't mind the distance iti's a great place to train

Some guy got jumped in the stair case from behind by 3 guys. Then stabbed him in the eye and in the body.

Thats why I want to learn some grappling so if someone is behind me I could just slam them to the ground or break their leg or arms.

Grappling is a poor choice for SD in a one on one situation, its freakin suicide in a multiple armed opponent scenario

The motion base for knife can be learned no matter where you live, these motions apply to most small items from ink pens to sticks...

Grappling is NOT SD especially when your motivation is dealing with multiple opponents!!

Again, you don't want to learn GRAPPLING to defend yourself from armed attacks from the rear. Grappling arts in general teach you to FACE your opponent! Do you have eyes in the back of your head? Grappling is a CLOSE range system! Too close if your attackers have weapons. Funny how the bad guys don't care about weapon laws! You can avoid these situations by not pissing off the wrong people for the most part. Don't trust anyone to get close enough to you to slip a shank in your body! It can be a moment when you walk past somebody or they walk past you! Don't get that close to ANYONE that might be armed! Look over your shoulders frequently! Understanding the TIME/DISTANCE thing is a MUST for armed engagements. The more space you have between yourself and the attacker the more TIME you have to react. Grappling = 0 space =0 time! Don't go there! Again I suggest being armed but more than that learning to QUICKLY deploy and USE your weapon!
You should practice deployment EVERY DAY from every position you can imagine being in. With your off hand, strong side, weak side, lying on your back or front or sides... everyway, everyday! Rapid deployment (getting the weapon out and ready to use) is probably the single most important thing you can learn to do. Then you can actually use it! Learn *When and *How to use it to keep yourself OUT of jail. It's your responsibility to know these things!

Brandishing is a crime in many states so don't pull it out unless you NEED to USE it!

Greco Roman wrestling... good for 1v1 SD... but for Mutliple opponents, only the throws would be effective... I think you might want to learn a SD based art... I'm not qualified to speak on it, but maybe that defendo art?

I think the misconception is grappling always takes place on the ground... SD grappling is him ending up on the ground through a powerful sweep, takedown, or throw.

                        Stay near a good trauma/ER!

Grappling range with armed attacker(s) = BLOODY MESS.

But don't take MY word on it!

the first half this is a fair representation of grappling a knifer...the second half is why armed is best...

any grappling taking place in the street or during a sd situation should be completely defensive, like if are suddenly taken down or fall and any enemy is now on top of you preventing your escape.
